High School Roundup: Big Red Comes Back vs. Harrison Central; Tyler Tops Ritchie
CADIZ – The host Harrison Central Huskies got off to as good of a start as they could have hoped for, but visiting Steubenville was the team that left smiling after a 4-2 victory.
Harrison Central jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Big Red starter Matt Fabbro put up zeros the rest of the way with some help from the defense behind him and a three-run third proved to be enough offense for Steubenville to win its third straight.
Big Red, now at the .500 mark after an 0-3 start, used some two-out lighting to flip the script on the Huskies in the third.
After the first two batters of the inning flew out, Royal Mayo and Fabbro hit back-to-back two out singles, then Holy Family University signee Hayden Hicks came up and made the Huskies pay, tripling off the wall in center to knot the score.
Myles Cooper then singled to bring Hicks in and give Big Red the lead, which it would not surrender.
Fabbro went the distance for a third time in as many starts this season, striking out five, walking two and hitting two batters. After the first inning, he kept the Huskies off the board and worked around base runners as he got the hosts to leave eight men stranded, four in scoring position, including a key strikeout to end the fifth with runners on second and third.
Gage Stoneking also went the distance on the mound for the Huskies, striking out four and walking just one, calming things back down after the tough third inning.
Big Red’s infield turned a double play to end the game.
