High School Roundup: Huskies Move On To District Finals; Wilharm Perfect In Regional Semis

CADIZ - Harrison Central scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back Monday in eliminating Philo, 12-2, in five innings in an Ohio Division IV East 2 District semifinal.

The second-seeded Huskies (20-8) built a 7-0 lead before the Electrics tallied twice in the top of the fourth. The hosts added three in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth to seal the deal.

Harrison Central will now face top-seeded Meadowbrook for the district title on Thursday at 5 p.m. at a site to yet be determined by Eastern District officials.

Olivia Tonkovich drove in four runs with a trio of singles to lead the Huskies' 12-hit attack. Mikayla Pelegreen doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs while Bailee Smith doubled twice and plated three runs.

Emma Skinner picked up the win with one strikeout and two walks in four innings. Pelegreen fanned two in an inning.

Ohio Division V District Semifinal

Tusky Valley 7, Barnesville 2

ZOARVILLE - The top-seeded Trojans (24-2) scored five times in the bottom of the first in eliminating the Shamrocks.

Barnesville could only manage two hits - a triple by Maddy Tyson and a double by Kylee Powell - off Tusky Valley's Brennan Reichman who struck out 13 and walked three.

Payton Dudzik knocked in a run for Barnesville (17-4).

W.Va. Class A Regionals

Trinity Christian 7, Magnolia 2

NEW MARTINSVILLE - The Blue Eagles got out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but the Warriors kept plugging away throughout the rest of the game to win game one of their Class A Regional Final on Monday.

Mallory McDiffitt struck out 11 for Magnolia. Only three of Trinity's seven runs were earned. Magnolia committed three errors on Monday, Trinity one.

Jessa Anderson tallied two hits for the Blue Eagles and stole a base.

Gabby Hudson, Sienna McKeever and McDiffitt smacked doubles for Magnolia.

Josalyn Phillips racked up four RBI for Trinity, recording a double and a home run. Olivia Timperio pitched a complete game in the win.

BASEBALL

Madonna 10, Clay-Battelle 0

WEIRTON – Reed Wilharm struck out 10 en route to pitching a perfect game leading the No. 1 ranked Madonna baseball team to a 10-0 victory in six innings via mercy rule against No. 4 seed Clay-Battelle in the West Virginia Class A Region 1 Upper Bracket Final Monday evening at Bowman Field.

With the win, Madonna will now play No. 2 seed Cameron in the regional finals next week.

Wilharm struck out two batters in every inning but the fourth when he recorded three outs on a pop-up, groundout and a flyout.

The boys in the white uniforms scored in every inning but the fifth.

Madonna has not allowed a run in its three postseason games while only giving up one hit. Paden City picked up a single for the only hit the Blue Dons have allowed. Lazear pitched a no-hitter Thursday against the Cee-Bees.

Madonna has only given up one run in its last five games.

St. Clairsville 12, Indian Creek 2

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The Red Devils' Brody Saunders continued his mastery over the Redskins as he struck out nine, walked four and scattered five hits in five innings. It was his sixth win over Indian Creek in the last two seasons.

He also helped himself at the plate with a single and double that knocked in two runs.

Caiden Bailey drove in three runs while Colten Florence had a two-run single.Micky Balgo and Roby Hanna evenly split four singles and two RBI.

Both teams enter Ohio Sectional Tournament action on Wednesday, May 28.
