West Virginia Adds Randy Moss Award Winner For 2026 Recruiting Class, Along With Others

It was another great weekend for West Virginia in the recruiting department, highlighted by adding its first in-state recruit.

Randy Moss Award-winning wide receiver Malachi Thompson announced his commitment to the Mountaineers on his Instagram on Sunday night. He picked the Mountaineers over Marshall, where Randy Moss played, Ohio and Akron.

Thompson is the first West Virginia commit out of the 20-plus players already pledged to WVU for the 2026 class.

Out of Nitro, West Virginia, Thompson isn’t rated on 247Sports, but has the metrics to be a great receiver at the next level. He stands at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, and received the top receiver award for West Virginia this year.

Thompson is the Mountaineers’ second receiver for the class.

Thompson wasn’t the only West Virginia addition over the weekend.

On Friday, as people were settling into the weekend, West Virginia received a commitment from athlete Charlie Hanafin. Hanafin played both defensive back and wide receiver at Dexter Southfield High School in Massachusetts.

He’s rated as a three-star wide receiver, per 247Sports, and the 13th-best player out of Massachusetts in the class. There’s a strong feeling he’ll play receiver at WVU.

Hanafin received offers from Stony Brook, Richmond, but received an offer from West Virginia after a strong performance at a Mountaineer camp this summer. As he made an impact in camp, Hanafin should make an impact a couple of years down the road.

Rich Rodriguez and WVU capped off the weekend by adding another offensive piece.

Three-star offensive lineman Lamarcus Dillard committed on Saturday afternoon. Dillard is the 29th-rated player in Maryland and the 123rd-ranked interior offensive lineman in the class. He received offers from Boston College, Marshall, Charlotte and FIU.

Dillard visited West Virginia on June 17, which won the 6-foot-4, 310-pound offensive lineman over, becoming the fourth lineman for the class.

With June coming to a close in just a couple of days, Rodriguez already has over 20 commitments, and the recruiting season is just beginning. It’s shaping up to be a big summer and first class for Rodriguez in his second time at WVU.

Starting at $2.99/week.
