Defensive Line, Linebackers Complete OVAC All-Star Football Rosters

Ohio’s Defensive Line, Linebackers Have Size And Quickness To Stop W.Va.

WHEELING – The Ohio coaching staff has announced the final roster spots – defensive line and linebackers – for the 79th OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game to be played on Saturday night at Wheeling Island Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:15.

The group includes Bridgeport’s Logan Baker; Fort Frye’s Braxton Ross; Beaver Local’s Isaac Prescott and Union Local’s Daniel Goodson. Back row, from left, are East Liverpool’s D’Shawn Kirby; Steubenville’s Ben Burgey; Barnesville’s Luke Taylor, Union Local’s Peyton Causby, Creek’s Caleb Bodo and Steubenville Catholic’s Tommy Pergi.

BAKER (6-2, 225) was a terror for the Bulldogs as they advanced to the Division VII playoffs. He ranked No. 95 in D-VII and was No. 15 in tackles in the Ohio Valley.

In addition to playing football, he also wrestled and played baseball.

He will attend Ohio Technical College.

Baker is the son of Randy and Kim Baker of Bridgeport.

ROSS (6-0, 210) was a tackling machine for the powerful Cadets. He charted 143 total tackles as a senior, with 24 being for lost yardage. He also recorded five quarterback sacks, forced three fumbles, blocked a pair of punts and recovered a fumble.

He earned first team all-Ohio Division VI and was the Eastern District Defensive Player of the Year, as well as first team all-OVAC.

He also wrestled at Fort Frye.

Ross will attend Ohio Wesleyan University to further his academic and athletic careers.

He is the son of Chad and Krista Ross and resides in Waterford.

PRESCOTT (5-11, 240) was a two-sport standout for the Beavers, earning honorable mention all-Eastern District and first team on all-Columbia County, all-Quad County and all-Buckeye 8. He was an OVAC placer in wrestling and qualified for the Division II state tournament.

Prescott will continue his academic and athletic careers at John Carroll University.

He is the son of Rick and Leah Prescot. They live in East Liverpool.

GOODSON (6-0, 200) lettered in three sports for the Jets – football, wrestling and track and field.

He was named first team all-OVAC and all-Buckeye 8, along with second team all-Eastern District and honorable mention all-Valley.

He will attend Heidelberg University to continue his academic and athletic careers.

Goodson is the son of Dave and Angela Goodson of Belmont.

KIRBY (6-5, 250) was recently named the Defensive MVP of the Ohio-Penn All Star Game.

As a senior, he charted 88 tackles, with 30 resulting in negative yards. He also had 11 quarterback sacks and nine hurries.

He was also a basketball standout for the Potters.

Kirby is the son of Roosevelt and Heather Kirby. They reside in East Liverpool.

TAYLOR (6-2, 210) was a two-way trenchman for the Shamrocks. However, he did his damage on the defensive side with 174 career tackles and 15 quarterbacks.

As a senior, he was selected first team all-Eastern District and all-OVAC. He was also honorable mention all-Ohio and Academic all-Ohio.

He will attend Miami University of Ohio.

Taylor is the son of Richard and Jennifer Taylor of Barnesville.

CAUSBY (6-2, 190) played a variety of positions for the Jets, excelling on both sides.

As a linebacker, he made 103 tackles, seven forced fumbles, registered 3.5 quarterback sacks, recovered three fumbles and intercepted one pass. On offense, he caught a pair of touchdown passes and ran for two others.

He was a first team all-Eastern District, all-Buckeye 8 and all-OVAC, as well as second team all-Valley and third team all-Ohio. He lettered four years in football, three in baseball and one in basketball.

He will continue his academic and athletic careers at Ohio Northern University.

Causby is the son of Robert and Randa Causby of St. Clairsville.

BODO (6-3, 210) saw action at defensive end, tight end and wide receiver as a senior for the Redskins.

He was a four-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball at Indian Creek, earning second team all-Eastern District honors as a senior in football. He was also a two-time captain.

Bodo will further his academic skills at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

He is the son of Robert and Rachel Bodo. They reside in Bloomingdale.

PERGI (6-0, 175) compiled 107 tackles for the Crusaders, who advanced to the Division VII playoffs last fall, from his safety spot.

He was a two-time all-OVAC and all-Eastern District first-teamer, as well as all-Ohio third team this past fall.

Offensively, he scored touchdowns in a variety of ways, including kickoff returns of 70 and 80 yards for touchdowns.

He will also attend Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Pergi is the son of Brenan and Lisa Pergi. They live in Steubenville.

West Virginia Features Standout Front Seven

WHEELING – West Virginia completed its roster for Saturday night’s 79th annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game at Wheeling Island Stadium by announcing its defensive linemen and linebackers.

They include Brooke’s Slater Schroeder; Wheeling Park’s Jayden Woods-Davis; Wheeling Park’s Coldin Burkhart; Linsly’s Patrick Christ; and John Marshall’s Isaac Swauger; Linsly’s Brody Cottrill and Wheeling Central’s Von Crall.

SCHROEDER (6-3, 240) was a second team all-Valley and all-OVAC performer for the Bruins.

A two-way player, he recorded 22 tackles, 2.5 quarterback sacks and two tackles for minus yardage from his end spot. Offensively, he blocked at a 93-percent grade and had six pancake blocks.

In addition to lettering all four years in football, he also wrestled for two years.

He is undecided on his future plans.

Schroeder is the son of Paul Schroeder and Girdaline DeGarmo and resides in Wellsburg.

DAVIS-WOODS (6-4, 240) saw action all along the defensive line for the Patriots where he charted 70 tackles, with nine being behind the line of scrimmage. He also had five quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles and blocked a trio of extra-points.

He was all-OVAC honorable mention and also ran track at Wheeling Park.

He will attend West Liberty University to further his academic and athletic careers.

Davis-Woods is the son of Monique Woods and resides in Wheeling.

BURKHART (5-9, 200) logged 80 tackles, with 15 for minus yardage and two quarterback sacks for the Patriots.

He was all-Valley, all-OVAC and second team all-W.Va. Class AAAA.

Also a standout baseball player, he will attend West Liberty University.

He is the son of David and Sarah Burkhart of Wheeling.

CHRIST (6-2, 215) starred at left tackle and linebacker for the Cadets.

He had 69 tackles in 10 games and was presented with the Coaches Award.

Also a baseball player.

He will attend Ohio State University.

Christ is the son of Kevin and Tracy Christ. He resides in Caldwell.

SWAUGER (5-9, 210) was an outside linebacker for the Monarchs.

He charted 38 total tackles, with 11 going for lost yardage. He also forced a trio of fumbles, sacked the quarterback twice and recovered a fumble.

He will attend Bethany College.

Swauger is the son of Gary Hatfield and Michelle Swauger. He resides in Wheeling.

COTTRILL (6-2, 210) served as team captain for the Cadets last fall and was the ‘Big Hit’ leader.

In addition to football, he also wrestled.

He will attend West Virginia University.

Cottrill is the son of Eric and Ashley Cottrill. They reside in Wheeling.

CRALL (6-2, 215) was a defensive end and running back for the Maroon Knights.

He will attend West Virginia University.

Crall is the son of Michael and Lisa Crall of Benwood.
