High School Roundup: Martins Ferry Sweeps Bellaire Behind Chirpas In Volleyball

MARTINS FERRY — Martins Ferry swept past visiting Bellaire by scores of 25-13, 25-22 and 25-9 in high school volleyball action Thursday night inside Tolbert Gymnasium.

Leading the Purple Riders was Giana Chirpas with 15 kills, four service aces and a pair of blocks. Olivia Harkness added 29 assists and four aces, while Maddie Lucas charted nine kills and eight digs. SJ Koller had 21 digs and a quartet of aces, while Londyn Hodor chipped in five kills.

Union Local Sweeps Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE — The Jets rebounded from their loss to Martins Ferry earlier in the week with a 25-11, 25-15 and 25-14 sweep of the host Bobcats.

Ameera Saunders posted a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Laken Vinskovich added 15 kills, five digs and five blocked shots, while Delaney Butler charted 35 assists and half-a-dozen digs. Alli Kellaway donated 11 digs and eight kills.

Monroe Central Outlasts River

HANNIBAL — In a back-and-forth match Thursday, the Seminoles got the final leg-up on the Pilots, winning in five sets, 23-25, 25-13, 17-25, 15-9.

Hallie Hammel had 17 kills to lead River, followed by Mallarie Maddy with 16. Hammel also had 19 digs while Maddy had 15.

Maci Isaly had 21 assists as well as a team-high three aces for the Pilots. Zoey Fox had 16 assists.

River’s Aubrey Fetty finished with 30 digs.

PREP GOLF

Barnesville Wins Quadrangular Match

CAMBRIDGE — Hayden Treadway shot a 2-over-par 38 to lead the Shamrocks to victories over Fort Frye, Cambridge and Shenandoah at the Cambridge Country Club.

Brady Gallagher added a 42 and Graham Spence shot 43 as Barnesville finished with a 167.

The Cadets were second with 183, followed by the Bobcats (193) and Zeps (201).

Shadyside Nips Buckeye Local

MOUNDSVILLE — The Tigers carded a team score of 173 which was one shot better than the Panthers at the Moundsville Country Club.

Shadyside’s Wyatt Parr earned medalist honors with a 38 on the par-36 layout.

Buckeye Local’s Kamden Kinyo fired a 39.

Barnesville Boys, Shadyside Girls Prevail

BARNESVILLE — The Shamrocks won the boys’ portion of an 8-team event at Barnesville Memorial Park. Union Local placed second.

Individually, Wheeling Central’s Michael Hutnick finished first in 18-minutes, 8-seconds.

On the girls’ side, the Tigers captured first behind Chloe Meholovitch’s winning time of 20:32. Barnesville was second as a team.

VOLLEYBALL

St. Clairsville Clears Shadyside

SHADYSIDE — The Red Devils defeated the Tigers in four sets on Wednesday, 25-10, 27-25, 25-16, 25-23.

Aubrey Nippert continued to lead the Shadyside attack with a team-high 16 kills along with three aces, a number matched by Ella Weeks.

Ali Weatherson finished with 33 assists. Ava Mercer had 19 digs for the Tigers.Ella Mercer finished with eight kills, and Sophie Boltz had two blocks.
