PREP ROUNDUP: River Volleyball Takes Down Shadyside in Four Sets

SHADYSIDE — Visiting River stunned Shadyside in four sets Saturday in high school volleyball action inside the Tigers Den. The Pilots navigated their way to the victory by scores of 25-14, 25-11, 20-25 and 27-25.

Mallarie Maddy led the way with 14 kills and nine digs. Hallie Hammel added 13 kills and a like number of digs. Aubrey Fetty had 20 digs, while Zoey Fox and Maci Isaly combined for 40 assists.

Isaly also had four serving aces.

CROSS COUNTRY

ST. MARYS — The top three finishers in the boys’ portion of the Autumn Classic were Ohio Valley products as the Tyler Consolidated tandem of Amos Kimble and Travis Moore finished 1-2. Kimble clocked out in 15-minutes, 27-seconds, while Moore finished in 16:13. Third-place went to Wheeling Park’s Rylin Moore in a time of 16:30.

The Patriots finished fifth in the team race.

On the girls side, Wheeling Park’s Brenna Tipton was second in 18:09, followed by John Marshall’s Zoe Zervos in 19:04.

The Patriots placed second as a team behind Williamstown.

BOYS SOCCER

John Marshall Blanks Brooke

MOUNDSVILLE — Ethan Corvino scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Monarchs to a season-opening, 10-0, victory against the Bruins on Saturday at Monarch Stadium.

Zaiden Becker netted his first two goals. Trent Burton also scored twice, plus an assist.

Apollo Miller and Chase Fromhart also scored their first high school goals to complete the scoring. Miller added three assists. Sam Keyser had one assist.

Tripp Bonds and Eli Ross combined for the shutout, an easy day for the pair as the defense held the Bruins (0-2) to one shot.

Bronson Pack made 13 saves for Brooke.

FOOTBALL

Liberty Union 21, Monroe Central 20 (Late Friday)

BALTIMORE — The Seminoles led 20-15 with less than two minutes to play, but the Lions scored on a 45-yard run to pull out the victory.

Monroe Central led 14-9 at the half as AJ Rutter scored on runs of 17 and 4 yards. Cooper Howell ran for two points. Neither team scored in the third quarter before Liberty Union went ahead 15-14 early in the fourth quarter.

A 5-yard scamper by Howell capped a 6-play, 75-yard march with 8:45 left to play, but the try for two failed, leaving the door open for the hosts.

Howell ran for 162 yards on 22 carries and Rutter had 53 on six totes. Howell also completed three of nine passes for 48 yards.

Liberty Union gained 326 total yards on 48 plays. Monroe Central finished with 311 on one less play.
