WVU’s Robinson Not Practicing, Other Three Now-Eligible Players Back To Making Impacts

During the media break, there was no shortage of news. The West Virginia district court ruled in favor of pass rusher Jimmori Robinson, wide receiver Jeff Weimer, safety Justin Harrington and running back Tye Edwards, making all four players available for the fall.

However, there were still concerns over Robinson’s eligibility and if he could still play for the Week 1 game, since the NCAA attorney stated he was academically ineligible.

In his first appearance to the media since the ruling, Rich Rodriguez cleared up what was going on with Robinson/

“We’re still waiting on him,” Rodriguez said. “We have our general counsel that’s working with the NCAA, the Big 12 and our compliance department to make sure we are interpreting the judge’s ruling correctly.

“Obviously, the order was favorable to those guys being able to play, but we’re still in the middle, still discussing that. But Jimmori is not at practice, but the other three are practicing.”

Just a couple of days out, it doesn’t look like Robinson will be ready for the season opener for Robert Morris on Aug. 26. However, the other three players are practicing and should all have immediate impacts on the team, maybe even on Saturday.

Rodriguez said he’s not worried about the players getting up to speed or in tempo shape because they’ve been working out on their own and working with the strength staff. They also know the culture and what’s expected by examining from afar.

“They all work,” Rodriguez said. “Whether they’re working on their own, or working with our strength staff, or working with trainers to get healthy, whatever the case may be. They’re not like totally new to everything. They’ve been around enough to kind of understand the culture. I don’t think twice about it.”

The three transfers, Weimer, Harrington, and Edwards, all have a chance to play on Saturday. All three are more experienced players, so picking up the schemes shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Weimer, coming over from Idaho State, had 75 grabs, for 1,294 yards and seven touchdowns a year ago. He’s definitely one to watch when he fully gets up to speed. Rodriguez mentioned on his radio show Monday that when they tracked Weimer’s distance traveled during practice, he’d get to about nine miles, compared to some of the other wide receivers who were getting five to seven.

Wide receiver Jaden Bray mentioned Weimer as one of two players, during the summer workouts, who constantly pushed the rest of the group. Bray said Weimer picked up right where he left off in the summer, and while dealing with the eligibility concerns, he didn’t slow down.

“It can be hard on the mental of somebody,” Bray said. “Even what he’s going through when he’s around us and he’s at the facility, you can’t really tell he’s, like, down or anything. He just continued to work. Works hard. He’s a big light in the room. We’re both new to the offense, but we both do a pretty good job of leaning on each other. It’s just been great having them back. He definitely is another weapon in our offense and on the team that we’re going to need this year. It’s just great having him.”

Edwards should also provide some much-needed running back depth, after the lack of backs was the talk of the whole camp. Rodriguez added a couple of players off the “waiver wire” to help, but they aren’t as experienced as Edwards.

Harrington was one of the group that already had some experience with the team, joining in the winter. He showcased his abilities earlier in the spring in front of defensive coordinator Zac Alley and learned his complex defensive scheme. He was also with Alley at Oklahoma.

“I’m pretty familiar with Justin, his ability level,” Alley said. “Tough kid. He’s long, brings a lot of range and size back there on the back end, and he’s very versatile. You can use him a lot of places. He can cover in space. He can fit in the box. He can blitz off the edge. He can play the post. He can play man-to-man, so it’s good to have him back and get the kind of versatility you can use it for.”

Rodriguez didn’t provide any intel on whether those three will play on Saturday. Against a weaker opponent, Rodriguez hopes a lot of players see action. That’s the purpose of playing against a weaker FCS school this early in the season. To see what you have, which should include those three.

“They’re all good players,” Rodriguez said. “All guys that when we were talking to them, trying to get them to come to West Virginia, we all thought, they’re all older guys, they are guys that have an opportunity to help us in certain positions.”
