Dunaway scores 5 times as Wheeling Park tops Bridgeport, W.Va., 5-1, in girls’ soccer

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Soccer is a game of speed and skill. Some players have an abundance of one or the other, but few at the high school level wield both.

Wheeling Park High School senior Julia Dunaway is one of those players that pairs breakaway speed with incredible soccer smarts. She showed both off Saturday with a five-goal scoring blitz against Bridgeport High School as the Lady Patriots improved to 7-0 on the season with a 5-1 victory.

Dunaway got the scoring started 11 minutes into the contest as she received a through-ball from sophomore midfielder Molly Bradshaw, outran a pair of defenders and buried the ball in the back of the net. Two minutes later she added her second goal after sophomore defender Lakin Chambers dribbled through the Indians’ defense and found Dunaway for the score.

Bridgeport added a goal about midway through the first half off a corner kick to make it 2-1 at the break. But Dunaway was just getting warmed up.

In the game’s 42 minute — two minutes into the second half — she took an excellent pass from Bradshaw just past midfield, outraced the defense and scored her third goal. Four minutes later in the game’s 46th minute Dunaway received the ball in the box off a corner kick from Bradshaw, scoring her fourth goal. Her final goal of the day came when senior Riley Perry pooched a great pass over the defense, allowing Dunaway to once again show off her speed and make the score 5-1.

Bradshaw added three assists for Wheeling Park. Senior keeper Hailey Hastings recorded four saves.

The Patriots on Tuesday face Morgantown High School at Wheeling Island Stadium.
