Football Roundup: Wheeling Park Defeats Spring Mills In Final Seconds, Fort Frye Stumps Wheeling Central
MARTINSBURG – Wheeling Park put forth a valiant goalline stand in the final seconds Friday night to hold off host Spring Mills for a 33-28 victory on Cardinal Field.
Park senior Brennan Wack turned 31 carries ran for 233 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Patriots (2-0). He added three catches, was in on a blocked punt and converted a fourth-down fake-punt on the other side.
The Cardinals had fourth-and-1 from the Patriots’ 3-yard line, but came up short with 24 ticks remaining.
Nolan Yanchak finished with 10 tackles for the Patriots, including two for loss.
Wheeling Park returns home next Friday to host Musselman at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Fort Frye 40, Wheeling Central 0
BEVERLY — The Maroon Knights found the going tough Friday night against the Cadets.
Fort Frye rushed for more than 400 yards and limited Central to less than 200 yards of total offense.
Gavin Rauch rushed for two touchdowns for the Cadets
Wheeling Central junior Nico Kusic passed for 71 yards and added 57 on the ground, while senior Kade Koroneos had two catches for 51 yards. Will Wear also picked off a pass for the Knights.
St. Clairsville 38, Beaver Local 7
LISBON – The Red Devils scored early and often in racing past the previously unbeaten Beavers to present veteran head coach Brett McLean with career win No. 200.
Sam McLean, Brett’s oldest son, was perfect on all nine of his passing attempts for 284 yards and four touchdowns as St. Clairsville (2-1) roared to a 38-0 halftime lead. mClean hooked up with Jaxon Starks from 51 yards; found Luke Schafer for a 45-yard scoring strike; connected with Ollie Muhly from 38 and Nico Jacob from 17.
Parker Galloway kicked a 34-yard field goal to start the scoring and tacked on five PATs for eight total points.
Dalton Neff returned an interception 26 yards for the other Red Devils’ TD.
Muhly had three catches for 85 yards.
Oak Glen 53, St. Marys 15
NEW MANCHESTER – Logan Murray piled up 309 all-purpose yards as the Golden Bears clawed their way past the visiting Blue Devils. Murray ran the ball 14 times for 155 yards and a TD, caught three passes for 77 more yards and another six-pointer. In addition, he returned a kickoff 77 yards for a score.
Maddox Bowen completed half of his 14 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns. He was also picked off twice.
Indian Creek 23, Union Local 15
WINTERSVILLE – The Indian Creek football team was challenged by Union Local, however, the Redskins were able to answer the call.
Indian Creek faced a deficit for the first time this season, however, the Redskins rose to the challenge as they answered the Jets’ touchdown with 20 straight points before holding on for a victory in Indian Creek’s home opener Friday night at Kettlewell Stadium.
Creek was led on the field by quarterback Ian Starkey, who amassed 279 yards of total offense and one touchdown. The senior signal caller completed 13-of-25 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a team-high 91 yards on 12 carries. Defensively, Starkey intercepted a pass to thwart one Jets’ potential scoring drive, and he also punted twice, averaging 39 yards a kick.
Brody Perzanowski led the charge for the Jets as the junior running back rumbled for 157 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
