High School Roundup: Golf Playoffs Start At Cadiz Country Club; Jets Give Seniors Decisive Win

CADIZ – The postseason got under way Monday for Ohio Division II schools at the Cadiz Country Club, and St. Clairsville continued its superb season by winning the event with a four-player score of 316, which was five shots better than Barnesville. The top 4 teams advance to district action

West Muskingum finished third at 324 with Martins Ferry earning the final spot, nosing out Union Local, 338 to 339.

Individually, the Red Devils’ Mavrik Malin fired a 73 to take medalist honors. Barnesville’s Hayden Treadway was second at 75, with teammate Brady Gallagher finishing third with a 77.

The top eight individuals not on one of the qualifying teams also advance to district action.

In addition to Malin, other Red Devils were Beau Mooney (78), Ryan Mooney (80) and Mason Conway (85).

The Shamrocks also had Dylan Gallagher (78) and Graham Spencer (91) scoring, while Hunter Shutler led the Purple Riders with an 80.

Others scoring were Dylan Pielech (81), Nolan Zambori (87) and Connor Best (90).

Union Local’s Lincoln Smith (78) and Landen Hanasky (82 also qualified.

The district tournament is Monday, Sept. 29 at Eaglesticks Golf Club in Zanesville.

Union Local Wins On Senior Night

MORRISTOWN – The red-hot Jets continued the drive towards an OVAC Class 4A playoff berth with their fifth straight victory as they made quick work of visiting Bellaire inside ‘The Hangar.’ The scores were 25-1, 25-5 and 25-5.

Lauren Vinskovich led the way with nine kills, four blocks and a trio of digs, while Ameera Saunders added six kills and eight digs. Alli Kellaway contributed five digs and a like number of service aces, while Delaney Butler charted 15 assists.

River Swept By Visiting Caldwell

HANNIBAL – The invading Redskins recorded a sweep over the Pilots by scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-12 inside the R.E. Potts Memorial Gym.

River was led by Hallie Hammel with 10 kills, 12 digs and a pair of service aces. Maci Isaly added 10 digs and seven assists.

HUNTINGTON – Wilson Hanna recorded a brace while Aiden McCroskey added a goal and an assist in the Patriots’ road victory. Dani Brazal Morcillo had a pair of helpers as Cooper Abraham made four saves.

Union Local Rallies By Buckeye Trail

MORRISTOWN – The Jets won a thriller over the visiting Warriors 20-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21 and 15-12.

Saunders charted 34 kills and 15 digs. Vinskovich added 18 kills and 22 digs, while Butler finished with 47 sets and 14 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

Shadyside, JM Win Titles

CAMERON – The Tigers won the girls portion of the Cameron Wet n Wild Cross Country Invitational Saturday as Chloe Meholovitch and Gabby Kosky ran 1-2 in 23-minutes, 12.90-seconds and 23:56.40, respectively.

Shadyside finished with 25 points. Wheeling Central was a distant second with 64, one more than John Marshall.

Brooke’s Elizabeth Edgell finished third, followed by John Marshall’s Lily Wright and Wheeling Central’s Rylee Wright.

In the boys’ race, Brooke’s Gavin Scott ran 19:28.40. He was followed by Wheeling Central’s Michael Hutnick in second; Magnolia’s Riley Dennis was third and John Marshall’s Carson Fitzpatrick fifth.
