High School Roundup: Pena Hits Game-Winner For Monarchs; Central Sweeps Big Red

MOUNDSVILLE — Daniel Pena scored the game-winner as the John Marshall boys soccer squad won a 2-1 slugfest against University on Monday.

Braydn Ruckman added the other goal for the Monarchs (6-4). Quinton West and Ethan Corvino had the assists.

Tripp Bonds stopped 12 shots.

Wheeling Central Sweeps Big Red

WHEELING — The Maroon Knights downed Steubenville in three sets Monday inside the Central Catholic Athletic Center, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19.

Lainey Peters had seven kills while Remy Peters had six kills for Wheeling Central.

Olivia Stephens tallied six service aces and 19 digs for the Maroon.

River Outlasts Shadyside In Five

HANNIBAL – The Pilots trailed 2-1 before rallying to win the last two sets and earn the win over the visiting Tigers inside R..E. Potts Memorial Gym by scores of 23-25, 25-17, 24-26, 26-24, and 15-13.

Hallie Hammel led River with 18 kills, 20 digs and two aces, while Zoey Fox added 15 kills, 12 assists, 15 digs and two aces. Maci Isaly contributed 24 assists, 16 digs and seven kills.

Patriots Compete in Noah Belden Invitational

AKRON — The Wheeling Park Patriots teed off at Brookside Country Club in Akron, Ohio on Monday, placing 17th out of 21 teams in the Nolan Belden Invitational.

Andrew Pennybacker carded an 81, best among the Patriots. Will Koegler shot an 83, Owen Abraham an 85, Seth Weidner a 91 and Quinn Marsh a 95.

Buckeye Local Wins Twice

EAST LIVERPOOL – The Panthers shot a 4-player total of 169 to breeze past Lisbon David Anderson (190) and Wellsville (207) Monday at Historic Highlands Golf Course.

Dugan Dubrovich and Spencer Grew shared tri-medalist honors with the Tigers’ Darnell Roe as each shot 38.
