High School Roundup: Wheeling Central Overwhelms United Local In OVAC Tournament; Ferry Scores Sweep

WHEELING – Top-seeded Wheeling central rolled into the OVAC Class 1A/3A girls’ soccer finals with a 10-0 blitzing of No. 4 United Local Wednesday night on the artificial surface at 16th Street.

Loni Kusic had a brace and an assist to lead the Maroon Knights (12-1)Elizabeth Steele scored twice and assisted on a third, while Elah Konkle had two goals and a pair of helpers. Seneca Heller found the net once and assisted on three others. Rylee Wright added a goal and an assist.

Maddie Kirchner also lit the lamp, while Mariah Ratcliffe logged an assist.

Bella Fitzsimmons charted two saves in the shutout.

VOLLEYBALL

Martins Ferry Spikes Buckeye Local

CONNORVILLE – Martins Ferry swept past host Buckeye Local by scores of 25-4, 25-10 and 25-17 Wednesday night in high school volleyball action.

Giana Chirpas led the way with 14 kills while Nicole Hammerquist added seven kills and a pair of blocks. SJ Koller had 19 digs and two service aces, while Olivia Harkness added 34 assists and four aces. Lexi Carte finished with half-a-dozen kills.

Monroe Central Sweeps Rival Magnolia

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Seminoles Dealt the Blue Eagles a three-set setback on Tuesday, 25-11, 25-23, 25-19.

Magnolia’s Jessa Anderson led her team in kills with nine, and had seven digs, behind only Hallee Baisel’s 13 and Sidney Knights’ nine. Knight added six kills. Sydney Quinet finished with 20 assists.
