Linsly’s Brayden Wade (4) fires a pass during Friday night’s game against St. Clairsville at Red Devil Stadium. Wade completed his first 13 passes and finished with more than 200 yards through the air. He also scored on a 15-yard run, but the Cadets fell, 24-14.
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – St. Clairsville waited four weeks to play at home and it treated the packed house at Red Devil Stadium to some thrilling action.
Tied at 14 in the fourth quarter, the Red Devils (3-1) scored the final 10 points to put away the pesky Cadets (1-2) by a 24-14 count.
Senior Ollie Muhly had quite a night as he ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown, returned a punt 80 yards and also picked off a pass to seal the hard-earned victory.
The loss was heartbreaking for Linsly which played tougher than most expected.
With the triumph, St. Clairsville now leads the all-time series 13-12-2. The Red Devils remain at home as East Liverpool visits on Friday.
Muhly got the scoring started when he fielded a Linsly punt at his own 20. He started to his left but immediately cut back to the right and set sail down the near sidelines behind a bevy of blockers. He took it to the house and Parker Galloway’s PAT made it 7-0 after one quarter.
Linsly drew even before the half when George Mamakos ran in from 25 yards and Joaquin Zarur booted the point-after.
Muhly gave the hosts a 13-7 advantage with a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Galloway made it 14-7 with his placement.
Wade scrambled in from 15 yards out and Zarur’s PAT deadlocked things at 14 with 9:321 left to play.
However, on the Red Devils first snap of the ensuing drive, junior Kale Fisher sped around left end, followed a key block by Mason Wilt and went 65 yards down the sideline to put St. Clairsville ahead for good at 21-14 after Galloway’s third PAT.
Wade was intercepted by Luke Schafer on Linsly’s next possession. He returned it deep into Linsly territory and Galloway split the uprights on a 27-yard field goal that split the uprights with 2:24 remaining.
Muhly then picked off Wade in the waning moments to seal the deal.
Linsly treks to New Philadelphia next Friday.
