Wheeling Park Girls Soccer Gets Goals From 5 Players in Shutout Victory Over Brooke

WELLSBURG — The Brooke girls’ soccer team put forth a strong showing against Wheeling Park, however, the Patriots proved too much for the Bruins to handle.

Wheeling Park netted three goals in the first half before tacking on two more in the second en route to a 5-0 victory Saturday afternoon on the grass field at Brooke.

“Wheeling Park is always good,” Brooke (1-3) head coach Jack Minger said. “That was our best game of the season even if the outcome didn’t show it.”

Five players scored goals for the Patriots.

“The girls played well,” Wheeling Park (4-0) head coach Tom Smith said. “Brooke put a lot of pressure on us. We had good balance. We had good possession. We had good passes. We played well.”

Offensively for the girls in white, Lakin Chambers and Brooke Petticord each tallied a goal and an assist, Molly Bradshaw, Julia Dunaway and Brenna Tipton each collected a goal. Also, Maggie Miller delivered a pair of assists for the girls from Ohio County.

Riley Perry played well in goal for the visitors as she was able to record the shutout.

“They do what they do,” Minger said. “They move the ball well. Their first three shots were from the center, and we did not get anyone in front of them. To me, that was our best game so far. If we played like that in our last two games, we would have had completely different outcomes.”

On the other side, Ivy Myers was under constant attack, and the junior made some key saves in goal to keep the Green and Gold in the match.

Myers and the Bruins’ defense did not make it easy for the Patriots to score goals.

“They pressured the ball more than I anticipated,” Smith said. “They forced us to dribble instead of passing.”

Brooke wanted to make Wheeling Park have to work hard.

“We wanted to pressure them,” Minger said. “We wanted to make them have bad passes. We wanted them to take bad shots.”

Wheeling Park is scheduled to play University at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday on the road.

“Things are going well right now,” Smith said. “We are 4-0. We want to get better every day. That is the important thing.”

Brooke is slated to play rival Weir at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in the second match of a boys’ and girls’ doubleheader at home. The Brooke boys are set to play East Liverpool at 5 p.m. with the girls’ match to follow.

“It’s another rivalry game,” Minger said.
