Bees break losing streak with 35-22 win over Red Raiders
FAIRMONT — After hitting a bump in the road and finding themselves on a four game losing streak, the East Fairmont Bees kicked off homecoming weekend the right way with a 35-22 victory over the Weir Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders, now 0-6 on the season, gave East Fairmont all they could handle, coming out hot in the opening quarter scoring the first touchdown of the game on an 80-yard touchdown run by Zackary Howland, but the Bees would come back swinging.
On their second drive of the contest, sophomore starting quarterback Logan Eakle, replacing an injured Anthony Corwin, would connect with Kaeden Barr on a 65-yard touchdown to put East Fairmont in front 7-6 with 1:33 left in the first quarter.
Eakle, who would finish his night throwing three touchdowns, would cash in on his second of the day in the second quarter after finding senior Gavin Murphey for a 24-yard strike to take a 14-6 lead.
In a matter of less than a minute, though, both teams would find themselves in a shootout, as Weir receiver Ryant Lyons would haul in a 65-yard touchdown and the Red Raiders would capitalize on the successful 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14 with 2:26 left in the first half.
Murphey, who had a solid game all around for East Fairmont, would answer quickly with a score of his own on the following kickoff return, taking it back 78 yards to put the Bees back in front 21-14.
Weir would then strike back on their next kickoff return, as Izaigha George would answer with a 95-yard house call of his own to make the score 21-20.
A bobbled snap on the extra point would force the Red Raiders to attempt to turn one point into two, but a lob into the back corner of the end-zone would be completed, giving them a 22-21 lead with 1:55 left in the second quarter.
At the break, Weir would maintain a one point lead.
East Fairmont, despite losing a bit of momentum in the last few minutes of the second quarter, would find their footing again in the third, as a Karson Church interception would set up an eventual 71-yard touchdown reception for the senior to put the Bees up 28-22 with 5:18 to go in the third quarter.
The Bees would keep their foot on the gas heading into the final quarter of play, scoring again this time on a rushing touchdown at the goal line with 11:16 left in the contest to take a 35-22 lead.
Weir, after a solid first half offensively, would fall behind in the dust, never scoring in the second half and ultimately allowing East Fairmont to capture their second win of the season.
The Bees, now 2-5 on the year, will return home next week at East-West Stadium to take on Buckhannon-Upshur.
Their last road game of the season will be the following week, October 31, against Philip Barbour.
Weir now drops to 0-6 on the year and will turn their attention to a matchup against East-Liverpool out of Ohio on the road next week.
