Indian Creek’s Kaydence Walker (31) and St. Clairsville’s Raegan Fillipovich (10) pursue a loose ball during Monday night’s match with Indian Creek at Red Devil Stadium. The Red Devils rolled, 10-2.
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The ‘Walking Wounded’ sounds like the name of a movie. It could be, but it’s not. It is, however, what the St. Clairsville girls’ soccer team could go by.
The injury-depleted Red Devils (9-5-2) had six players sidelined for Monday night’s match with visiting Indian Creek on the artificial surface at Red Devil Stadium. It didn’t matter.
Emma Gasber scored five goals and the Morgan Sisters – Elizabeth and Isabelle – combined for the other five tallies and teamed for four assists as St. Clairsville posted a 10-2 triumph over the Redskins.
“It’s been tough. It’s like the boogie man got us there,” St. Clairsville head coach Wes Stoner said of the injuries. “Hopefully, we’ll get a few of them back before the (sectional) tournament starts next week. We played well tonight, though.
“We had some breakdowns, but you’re going to have that with five freshmen playing and four starting for the first time in their varsity careers,” Stoner added. “They did pretty well.”
St. Clairsville is without the services of last year’s leading scorer junior Ashlynn Lednik (knee) and the senior trio of Ava Borkoski (knee), Kendall Sall (hip) and Olivia McKeever (concussion). Also out are junior Kaylee Shafer (concussion) and Ishmeet Kaur (foot).
Senior Maxim Lussier also became ill during the contest and missed most of the second 40 minutes, of which most were played with a running clock due to the OHSAA six-goal differential rule.
Stoner said Lednik, Borkoski and Sall are all done for the season.
“It’s good to have all that talented youth finally getting their chance at playing varsity minutes,” Stoner continued. “Next year we will have a significant number of girls coming back that saw a lot of action this season.”
Elizabeth Morgan had four goals and a trio of assists, while Isabelle added a goal and an assist. Isabella Cunningham charted three helpers and Raegan Gaiser had one.
Goalkeeper Kiya Kyer, playing with a torn labrum suffered last season, made just one save.
Indian Creek’s Kaydence Walker scored both goals for her team.
St. Clairsville closes out the regular season at Oak Glen Tuesday. It begins postseason play next Wednesday when Minerva visits Red Devil Stadium.
“They passed up a chance at hosting a first-round match to come here and play us,” a puzzled Stoner said of the draw. That match begins at 6:30 p.m.
