High School Football Preview: Jets, Panthers Renew Acquaintances In Yorkville On Friday
YORKVILLE – Union Local and Buckeye Local will get together for the 23rd time Friday night on the natural grass surface at World War II Memorial Stadium. The Jets lead the all-time series 15-7.
This is a matchup of teams headed in opposite directions entering week 8 as Union Local (5-2) has reeled off four straight victories after back-to-back losses, while Buckeye Local (2-5) has dropped three of its last four since beating Shadyside in overtime.
The Jets had prevailed in 10 of the last 11 meetings, with the Panthers coming out on top in 2019. The past four meetings haven’t been close as Union Local owns a scoring advantage of 154-41, including 42-21 in Morristown a season ago.
Union Local enters the game ranked ninth in Ohio Division V, Region 19. The Jets play their final two games at home as Bellaire visits in week 9 before the western Belmont County showdown with rival Barnesville to close out the regular season.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Cameron at Valley
PINE GROVE – The Dragons (3-1) and Lumberjacks (0-5) will meet for the 60th time Friday night at Thomas C. West Field, with the visitors looking to rebound after a loss to Tyler Consolidated two weeks ago. They were idle last week.
Cameron leads the all-time series, which has been played annually since 1967, 35-24. The Dragons have dominated of late, winning 10 straight, 13 of the last 15 and 18 of the last 21.
Valley last won in 2014 and 2015.
Cameron is sixth in the latest WVSSAC Class A ratings.
The game will begin at 7 p.m.
Bloom-Carroll at St. Clairsville
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – In possibly the game of the night, the Red Devils (5-2) welcome the Bulldogs (5-2) to Red Devil Stadium for the fourth all-time meeting, but the first in the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 on Hall of Fame Night.
Bloom-Carroll and St. Clairsville have met in Zanesville twice and St. Clairsville once in the postseason. The Red Devils won in 2018 at Sulsberger Stadium (41-14), but the Bulldogs have prevailed in 2020 (40-0) in Belmont County and 14-3 a year later at Sulsberger Stadium.
Both squads are ranked in their respective divisions as the Bulldogs check in at No. 10 in Division III, Region 11, one spot behind Steubenville. The Red Devils are fifth in Division V, Region 17.
The Red Devils have won five of their last six, the only setback coming to West Virginia-ranked Wheeling Park (24-7) two weeks ago. The Bulldogs have won four straight after suffering back-to-back losses to Teays Valley (14-0) and undefeated Jonathan Alder (14-10).
John Marshall at Keyser
KEYSER – This is a matchup of 4-1 West Virginia Class AAA ranked teams looking to improve on their position at Alumni Field.
The Monarchs rebounded with a 30-27 victory at Warren Local last week and are currently 16th. They have also defeated Marietta (23-21), Weir (42-12) and Bellaire (34-26). Their lone loss came at Parkersburg South (41-14).
Meanwhile, the Golden Tornado checks in at No. 11. They have won four in a row since a season-opening loss to Pendleton County (48-34). They have beaten Lewis County (49-8), Robert C. Byrd (42-20), Hampshire (44-16) and Weir (34-6) last week.
The all-time series is deadlocked at 2-2. John Marshall has won in 2022 and 2024, while Keyser has prevailed in 2020 and 2023.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Martins Ferry at Cambridge
CAMBRIDGE – The Purple Riders (4-2) look to extend their winning streak to four in a row when they travel west on I-70 to meet the winless Bobcats (0-7) on the artificial surface at McFarland Stadium.
Martins Ferry has reeled off wins over Lucas (34-15), Uniontown, Pa. (59-13) and Buckeye Local (45-0) after losing in consecutive weeks to Independence, W.Va. and Edison.
This will be the 41st all-time meeting, with the Purple Riders holding a slim, 21-19, advantage. The first meeting was in 1909 and, according to reports, Martins Ferry left the field in a dispute during the 1921 game in Guernsey County, losing 7-5.
Martins Ferry, which won 41-0 last year, has won 13 of the last 17 matchups. Cambridge won in 2021 and 2022. The two did not play in 2023.
The Purple Riders are 10th in Division VI, Region 23. The Bobcats have lost 28 straight.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
IN OTHER games of interest on Friday, Shadyside (2-5) welcomes Ohio-ranked Caldwell (4-3) to Fleming Field; Ohio-ranked River (5-2) heads west to Sarahsville to meet Shenandoah (3-4); Brooke (3-3) hosts West Virginia-ranked Frankfort (6-0) on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium in Wellsburg; Beaver Local (4-3) visits Kettlewell Memorial Stadium in Wintersville to tangle with unbeaten Indian Creek (7-0) in a battle of Ohio-ranked squads; and Monroe Central (2-5) heads north to the Gem City to meet Ohio-ranked Toronto (6-1) in their first-ever meeting.
On Saturday, Oak Glen (5-1) travels to Brookside to meet Bridgeport (3-4) on Perkins Field inside Bill Jobko Stadium in a battle of state-ranked teams. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Steubenville Catholic (4-3) makes the long trip to Fairport Harbor Harding on Lake Erie to battle the No. 1 ranked Division VII, Region 25 team.
