High School Roundup: Wheeling Park, John Marshall Golf Squads Earn State Tourney Spots

CHARLES TOWN — The Wheeling Park golf squad qualified for the WVSSAC state tournament Monday after taking second place at the Class AAAA North Regional at Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town, W.Va..
The top four teams in the region qualified to advance to state competition, which is slated to take place at Oglebay’s Jones Course on Oct. 14 and 15.
Washington topped the field with a 223 team score, and Wheeling Park followed with a 235. Morgantown (238) and University (244) finished third and fourth, respectively, on the Par 72 course.
For Park, Andrew Pennybacker led the team, carding a 76, while Will Koegler carded a 78, Seth Weidner an 81, and Owen Abraham an 86.
Washington’s Tommy Evans was the medalist at a 67, five under Par.

John Marshall Captures Regional Crown
FAIRMONT — John Marshall claimed the top spot in Monday’s Class AAA, Region 1 tournament at Green Hills Golf Country Club in Fairmont, qualifying for the W.Va. State Tournament on Oct. 14 and 15 at Oglebay.
The Monarchs’ 236 team score was lowest amongst the field. John Marshall was followed-up by second-place Fairmont Senior, who shot a 252 to also qualify as a team for states.
Brooke finished in sixth place at a 278.
Hayden Harvey led John Marshall with a 78, followed by Drew Marling and Brayden Kempkens each carding 79’s. Brandt Blake rounded out the team at an 86.
Colton Yensen led Brooke with an 86.
