Local Teams, Individuals Secure Spots at West Virginia Cross Country Meet
WHEELING — If you felt rumbling underfoot Saturday, that was cross-country runners all across the state of West Virginia competing at regional championships for a ticket to the WVSSAC state meet on Nov. 1.
As the dust settled Saturday, multiple local teams and individuals secured their spots for the state meet, which will be once again held at Cabell Midland High School.
Class AAAA
The Wheeling Park girls finished sixth as a team in the Class AAAA North Regional, but counted among the Patriots was the top finisher in the entire field, with Brenna Tipton crossing the finish line in 18:22.20, over 35 seconds ahead of the next-fastest runner.
Park’s boys team finished fourth, behind first-place University, second-place Morgantown and third-place Washington.
The Patriots boys had two runners in the top-10; Rylan Moore (fourth) and Tyler Bishop (10th).
Class AAA
The John Marshall Monarchs boys and girls cross country teams are headed to the state meet after the boys finished third in Class AAA, Region 1 and the girls finished second.
The Monarchs’ Zoe Zervos flew through the course at Preston High School in 20:01.70, beating out the entire field for a first-place finish. Teammate Kalyn Reese was close behind in third and Lily Williams finished just inside the top 10.
John Marshall’s Braxton Ullom placed 10th in the boys race.
Class A
Wheeling Central’s girls team placed third in the Class A, Region 1 meet to reach the state tournament. Ila Hutnic was their top finisher in seventh place.
Madonna’s Sophia Soly finished fifth in the race to qualify individually.
