Rich Rodriguez Provides Update On QB Nicco Marchiol, RB Tye Edwards
The mounting injuries for West Virginia after the blowout loss against Kansas are still carrying over after Utah.
The biggest question after Utah was the status of quarterback Nicco Marchiol. Marchiol played the first four games of the season, but went to Rich Rodriguez the Monday after Kansas and informed him of a lingering mid-foot injury. Marchiol went to Colorado, the Tuesday before Utah, to see a specialist. A couple of days later, Marchiol was listed as “out” for Utah.
On Rodriguez’s radio show, he said Marchiol was in Arizona getting another opinion on his foot was told he could be out for several weeks. Rodriguez told him to communicate with the WVU doctors to make sure the information lines up. Right now, Rodriguez said Marchiol is definitely out in the short term.
Marchiol’s replacement, Texas A&M transfer Jaylen Henderson, is also banged up, along with Charlotte transfer Max Brown, according to Rodriguez. But, Rodriguez said, they’ll probably be good to go against BYU.
BYU coach Kalani Sitake talked about how the injuries and quarterback changes could actually be a challenge for his defense.
“We prepare for all of them,” Sitake said. “They use a bunch of quarterbacks. They all have stats, so it’s not easy. We’ll have to prepare for all of them.”
The past two weeks, WVU has been without running back Tye Edwards. Edwards had a big game and carried the workload in the comeback win over Pitt. He had three touchdowns and over 100 yards. Edwards was a surprise addition to the injury report before Kansas. He was listed as probable and then didn’t play, which Rodriguez found out just before the game.
Edwards remained on the injury report leading up to Utah and was listed as a game-time decision. He warmed up and didn’t play.
Rodriguez said on his radio show that he was hopeful Edwards would be back for BYU, but on Tuesday, he didn’t know about his status for the game. He’ll find out in the coming days.
Edwards’ backup, Cyncir Bowers, didn’t play against Utah either, with a concussion. Rodriguez said Bowers “should be back.”
“We’re hoping to get one or two of those guys back,” Rodriguez said.
If not, it’ll be a mix of depth players Clay Ash, Tyler Jacklish and Diore Hubbard, just like against Utah.
To help the offensive line, starting center Landen Livingston had a similar situation to Edwards, where he dressed and warmed up before Utah, but didn’t play. Rodriguez provided a similar response to Edwards, too, and said he’s hopeful he’ll be good to go this week.
Offensive lineman Kimo Makane’ole was injured against Utah and is said to be “day-by-day.”
There still might be injuries at major positions, but WVU is getting healthier, and this is the last game of a long stretch of physical games before its first bye.
