WVU RB Tye Edwards out for season, QB Khalil Wilkins doubtful ahead of TCU
For the second-straight week, West Virginia lost one of its premier starters for the rest of the year.
Rich Rodriguez announced running back Tye Edwards is out for the season with a hip injury. Edwards didn’t play against UCF after being ruled out and was seeing a specialist in Alabama leading up to the game.
Edwards played in just one full game this season against Pitt, where he rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns. The Northern Iowa transfer played a couple of snaps against BYU, but didn’t play in any other game. He looked to be the starting running back for the rest of the year after starter Jahiem White went down against Ohio with a season-ending injury.
That wasn’t the only injury news for this week. Quarterback Khalil Wilkins went down at the end of the UCF game and was on crutches after the game. Rodriguez said he just had the wind knocked out of him in the postgame press conference.
Monday, Rodriguez said Wilkins was questionable to play against TCU. Tuesday, Rodriguez said Wilkins probably won’t be able to practice this week, but he’ll work really hard to get to a point where he can come in if there’s an emergency.
It doesn’t sound like Wilkins will play, so true freshman Scotty Fox is in line for his second consecutive start. Fox only played a couple of drives before being benched by Wilkins. Fox was 6-for-17, throwing for 47 yards. Wilkins was 5-for-10 passing and went for 32 yards.
Charlotte transfer Max Brown looked like he could’ve gone in against UCF, but Rodriguez said he wasn’t “100 percent” ready to play. He should be ready to play against TCU. Brown has only played in one game against Utah for a drive and then was injured.
Behind Fox and Brown, redshirt junior Scott Kean and freshman walk-on Max Anderson should get some backup reps this week in case Fox were to go down or play poorly.
On defense, starting nickel Fred Perry is questionable heading into TCU. Perry has played in every game and has 45 tackles and a sack on the season.
Defensive lineman Hammond Russell and quarterback Jaylen Henderson were both ruled out for UCF, and Rodriguez didn’t provide an update on their status. It doesn’t sound like Henderson will play.
The first availability report comes out at 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
