Brooke, Wheeling Park, Wheeling Central Finish Seasons Strong At 2025 State Cheer Competition

The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights compete in the 2025 WVSSAC Class A state cheer competition Wednesday night inside the Charleston Coliseum.

CHARLESTON — The West Virginia high school cheer season came to a head Wednesday inside the Charleston Coliseum, where the 2025 WVSSAC state cheer championship saw winners crowned across four classes of competition.

Locally, Wheeling Park, Wheeling Central and Brooke took to the stage throughout Wednesday’s competitions.

Brooke won the Class AAA championship, while Bridgeport finished as runners-up.

The Bruins’ championship squad was composed of Paisley Sadler, Ava Gatten, Candace DeVore, Lyla Van Horn, Ava Scherich, Marlee Ewusiak, Gianna Svokas, Raelin Stoll, Gabriella Hornick, Addison Scherich, Kayla Elson, Sophia Sacripanti, Karlee Hornick, Braya Mazeika, and Bryson Murray. Head coach is Michelle Scherich.

The Bruins reached states by winning the Class AAA Region 1 championship.

Wheeling Park competed in Class AAAA, where Woodrow Wilson were crowned champion, and Hurricane finished as runners-up.

The Patriots got to the big dance by winning the Class AAAA North Region championship.

Wheeling Park’s squad consists of Molly Brinker, Caitlyn Anderson, Mallory McGee, Emily LaFlam, Addison Baker, Kaelynn Roxby, Karringtyn Miller, Riley Habig, Baileigh Brothers, Landon McKeegan, Emilie Carman, Abby O’Donnell, Elly Miller, Kaelyn Warfield, Gianna Childers, and Sahvanna Alig. Head coach is Shawna Shepherd.

Wheeling Central came in third in Class A, where Tug Valley were crowned champions and Man came in as runners-up.

“It was a great day,” Wheeling Central head coach Jessica Becker said. “We couldn’t be happier with how the girls performed. They hit their routine. We were just thrilled with how they performed today. They made us very proud.”

Wheeling Central’s team was made up of Bella Contraguerro, Alexa Loy, Annabella Blatt, Jocelyn Dally, Addison Hughes, Claire Kerr, Aleah McCardle,

Caroline Honaker, Addie Miller, Sophia Gooch and Lily Weasenforth.

Wednesday made for the 10th consecutive appearance in the state competition for Wheeling Central. The Maroon Knights made it to states this year by claiming the top spot in the Class A Region 1 competition.

Becker spoke highly of her two seniors, Contraguerro and Loy.

“I’m very proud of the entire team, but I want to just give a special credit to my two seniors, Alexa Loy and Bella Contraguerro,” Becker said. “They’re just wonderful young ladies and incredible athletes. And the leadership that they showed this season was really what set this year apart for us. They were just really wonderful.”
