High School Roundup: Monarchs Win In OT, Magnolia Survives vs. Dragons

MOUNDSVILLE — The John Marshall Monarchs boys basketball squad took an overtime win against Elkins on Monday, 58-52.

The Monarchs’ Preston Watkins nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with nine seconds left, only to see Elkins’ Isaiah Nutter tie the game with four seconds to play. The two teams were tied 50-50 at the end of regulation.

Jackson Helms led John Marshall in scoring with 17 points. Watkins scored 13, and Aiden Clegg scored 10.

Magnolia 57, Cameron 55

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Blue Eagle needed every bit of a 28-point outburst from senior Kingston Christen in order to hold on for a close victory over the Dragons on Monday.

Christen scored 14 in the final quarter Monday, crucially going 8-10 from the foul line in the period.

Brayden Byers and Finn Loy joined their teammate in double figures with 10 apiece.

Cameron was led by Colin Magers, who had a 20-point outing. Hunter Dobbs and Camden McCauley each scored nine.

Cameron led 28-27 at halftime, and the two teams were knotted 37-37 heading into the fourth.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

John Marshall 77, Tyler 25

MOUNDSVILLE — The Monarchs pounded the visiting Knights, led by 21 points from Rilee Storm.

The Monarchs had three others in double figures– Kalyn Reese scored 15, Nia Miller scored 11 and Kaylee White scored 10. Reese put through three 3-pointers and Storm made four.

Katie Grimm and Ryland Henderson each scored eight to lead Tyler.

Cameron 55, Magnolia 33

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Dragons turned a lockdown first half into a decisive victory Monday on the road against the Blue Eagles.

Cameron held their opponents to nine points in the first half, a period that saw them build a 21-9 advantage.

Kendra Thomas came through with 24 points for the Dragons, 17 coming in the first half. Emma Francis was the next-highest scorer with nine.

Karli Warder led Magnolia with nine points.

Wheeling Park 43, Buckhannon-Upshur 18

BUCKHANNON — The Patriots dominated on the road Monday against the Buccaneers.

Leah Young led Wheeling Park with 19 points, making five 3-pointers in the contest. Karringtyn Miller put together a versatile eight-point, six-assist, five-rebound statline, while Layla Pettit had four points, nine rebounds and five steals.

Bellaire 54, St. Clairsville 36

BELLAIRE — The Big Reds defended homecourt in the ‘House of Champions’ on Monday against the invading Red Devils.

Tamya Morgan racked up 21 points to lead Bellaire. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds. Kayla Edgar scored 19 points with seven steals. Aubree Hines had eight points and five steals.

Barnesville 64, Cambridge 35

BARNESVILLE — Roselyne Anderson scored 14 points for the Shamrocks on Monday, one of four Barnesville players in double-figures in a home win against the Bobcats.

Becklee Olivers scored a dozen, Lydia Fuchs scored 11 and Lynzey Kiser scored 10 for Barnesville. The Shamrocks led 20-3 after one quarter of action.

Madonna 43, Valley 38

PINE GROVE — The Blue Dons earned a hard-fought road win Monday against the Lumberjills.

Rylee Birkhimer, Adalynne Helsh and Taylor Birkhimer all scored 11 points for Madonna.

Valley was led by Laken Dawson, who scored 15. Valley led 12-4 after the first quarter but their lead was trimmed to 17-16 at halftime. Madonna led 25-24 going into the fourth.

Magnolia 62, Madonna 30

NEW MARTINSVILLE – The Blue Eagles trounced the Blue Dons Saturday at home.

Kaylee Yost led Magnolia with 25 points. Nine Magnolia players scored Saturday.

Madonna’s Sophie Brady led the Blue Dons with eight.

Cameron 46, River View 34

BRADSHAW – The Dragons went on the road and outscored the Raiders by a dozen.

Kendra Thomas scored 16 to lead Cameron, reaching her total strictly via field goals.

Kaci Hatfield scored 13 to lead River View.
