Rally Comes Up Short For Pilots vs. Tyler Consolidated
HANNIBAL – A second half rally for River High’s Lady Pilots must’ve felt like coach Rick Isaly’s crew was pushing a giant snowball uphill Tuesday night at the R.L. Potts gymnasium.
Tyler Consolidated earned its first win in three starts behind senior Katie Grimm, who took charge late with a game-high 23 points as she nears 1,000 for her career in a 50-39 Silver Knights win.
“We fought our way back to pull even at 25, but (Tyler) hit a couple 3’s late in the third,” said Isaly, as the visitors led 31-29 after three. The Silver Knights started the fourth with 15 unanswered and River contributed to most of it with turnovers as the Pilots had an incredible 30 giveaways.
“It’s our seventh game and we shouldn’t be making the same mistakes over and over,” added Isaly, whose 2-5 record squad numbers only seven players. “We’re young and when (Tyler) pressed it led to a lot of turnovers.”
Grimm, headed to Arcadia (PA) University near Philadelphia, scored 16 of her points in the second, while Addison Reed added 14 for Scott Wall’s 1-2 record club.
It wasn’t a shooting clinic for either club in the opening panel as River (1-for-12) fell behind 8-0 before Lady Pilot senior Zoey Fox swished in the final seconds to cut it to 8-5.
The hosts trailed 17-10 in the second quarter before senior Ava Wohnhas and Fox scored under the glass, and Wohnhas added two from the line at 1:18.
Grimm’s 3-pointer kept TC up 21-16 at halftime.
Despite their mistakes River chipped away and senior Lynn Jones was a big part of it. The senior had three goals in the panel. Jones’ putback made it 25-24 Tyler, and a Fox free throw at 2:04 pulled River even.
Riley Stover and Grimm each nailed “treys” for Tyler before Jones’ rebound made it 31-29 entering the final round.
Grimm and Reed carried the load in the fourth as the visitors, who shot 38 percent (19-for-50), pulled away as the Lady Pilots had trouble setting up their offense. TC had 18 turnovers.
Fox and Wohnhas had 11 points each for River, while Jones added nine. The Lady Pilots host Monroe Central on Thursday.
