REPORT: WVU Hires SEC Coach As Running Backs Coach
West Virginia has reportedly settled on its running backs coach for the future.
The Mountaineers are reportedly eyeing former Kentucky running backs coach and special team’s coordinator Jay Boulware to be their next RB coach, according to John Brice of FootballScoop.com. FootballScoop.com has been a source for coaching carousel news since 1999. Boulware has been coaching for over 20 years and recently lost his job because Kentucky fired long-time coach Mark Stoops, leaving his coaching staff scattered.
Rich Rodriguez and his staff didn’t waste time finding a replacement for Larry Porter, who was WVU’s RB coach since March. He was recently announced as Auburn’s running backs coach last Saturday. Boulware would be Rodriguez’s third running backs coach in 2025 (Chad Scott, Porter, Boulware).
Boulware has been the Wildcats’ running backs and special teams coach since the 2023 season, coaching in the Gator Bowl in 2023. One of the more prominent prospects while at Kentucky was now Buffalo Bills running back Ray Davis, who was drafted in the fourth round in 2024. The Wildcats’ 2025 rushing attack was seventh in the SEC, averaging 139 yards per game.
Prior to his short stop at Kentucky, Boulware spent two years as an offensive intern with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He worked with Kentucky’s all-time leading rusher, Benny Snell Jr., in his short two years.
Boulware spent the 2020 season as an associate head coach for special teams and the tight ends coach at Texas, helping the No. 19 Longhorns finish 7-3 overall and capture the Alamo Bowl title in 2020.
He spent a significant part of his career at Oklahoma under former head coach Bob Stoops as the running backs and special teams coach. In his seven years, Boulware won a Big 12 Championship in 2018 and then lost in the first round of the four-team College Football Playoff.
Boulware developed six of his running backs on the to 1,000-yard seasons and five of his running backs earned first or second-team All-Big 12 honors. Three of them were drafted into the NFL.
Before Oklahoma, Boulware had spent time at Auburn, Iowa State, Utah and Stanford. He started his career as a graduate assistant at Texas, where he is from.
Boulware is not expected to start at WVU until after the new year, according to FootballScoop.com.
