High School Roundup: Monroe Central Ekes By Wheeling Central On Miller’s Free Throws

WOODSFIELD – Jadyn Miller made two free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining Wednesday night as Monroe Central edged past visiting Wheeling Central, 62-60, on Junior Winland Court inside Monroe Central High School.

Miller finished with 10 points and handed out eight assists.

Miley Bommer paced the Seminoles (15-3) with 15 points, one more than Jacey English who drilled four trifectas, three coming in the fourth quarter. Brylee McFrederick added 13. English added six boards and Bommer five.

The Maroon Knights’ Seneca Heller led all scorers with 29, with 20 coming in the second half.

Wheeling Central led 14-13 after one quarter and 25-23 at the half, but Bommer scored nine points in the pivotal third quarter.

Edison 74, Harrison Central 44

RICHMOND — It has been a special season for the Edison girls basketball team.

They added to the memorable start, the program’s best in over two decades, Thursday night with an impressive win over rival Harrison Central on senior night improving to 15-0 in the process.

Sophia Henderson, one of two Edison seniors and the lone one in the line up Thursday, tied for the team high with 11 points in the win. She and classmate Ava Cline, who is injured, were honored prior to the game.

Edison got off to a fast start opening a 19-8 lead after one quarter and led 37-13 at halftime. The Cats knocked down three of its nine 3-pointers for a 9-0 run to start the second half to leave little doubt about the outcome.

In addition to Henderson’s 11, Aliya Glover tallied a like number, while Addison Casto, Lacie Pelley and Kayla Koehnlein each netted 10 to put five Wildcats in double figures.

For the Huskies, Kara Blackburn and Mikayla Pelegreen each netted eight points, while Emily Cope had seven.

Union Local 55, East Liverpool 22

EAST LIVERPOOL – Laken Vinskovich scored 20 points and visiting Union Local ran its record to a sparkling 17-1 with a victory over East Liverpool (6-12) inside the Potter Fieldhouse.

Delaney Butler knocked down three triples en route to 15 points for the Jets. Ellie Greenwood added nine and Alli Kellaway seven.

Brooke 49, St. Clairsville 36

BOYS BASKETBALL

Martins Ferry 64, Harrison Central 57

CADIZ – Anthony Booth netted 24 points, Eli Smith 11 and Walkquem Cox 11 as the Purple Riders (9-6) held off the Huskies.

Martins Ferry led 30-23 at the half before a 21-9 third-quarter advantage bumped the count to 51-32. However, Harrison Central (3-11) outscored Martins Ferry 25-13 in the fourth, but it was too little, too late.

Bryson Kamarec led the Huskies with 22 and Cooper Thompson chipped in 14, with 12 coming on four treys. Colson Croythers added eight.

Toronto 67, Buckeye Local 45

TORONTO – After leading by just three points at halftime, the Red Knights outscored the Panthers by 11 in the third and eight in the fourth on their way to a 67-45 victory Thursday night inside the George J. Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.

Colt Joynson collected a game-high 21 points to lead the way offensively for the boys from the Gem City as Brody Winters tallied 13 and Brady Fair finished with nine.

Matt Morris contributed a team-high 11 points to lead the way for Buckeye Local, Haden Wilhelm delivered 10 and Kolton Carothers recorded eight. Carothers hit both of the Panthers’ 3-pointers.
