Weather Forces A Switch In OVAC Bill Hinegardner Dual Meet Wrestling

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Mother Nature has thrown a huge snowball into the OVAC Bill Hinegardner Dual Meet Wrestling Championships, which were slated for Wednesday and Thursday.

According to Meet Director Jim Rocchi, the schedule has been altered due to the large amount of snow that fell Monday and the frigid temperatures predicted for Wednesday.

The Class 1A/2A and Class 4A events are now scheduled for Friday at the Brooke County Wellness Center inside Brooke High School just north of Wellsburg. The Class 3A and Class 5A events will be held, for now, on Thursday at the John Marshall Fieldhouse in Moundsville.

Action gets under way both nights at 6 p.m. with semifinals in each classification. The finals will be wrestled approximately 20-30 minutes following the last semifinal to conclude.

Top-seeded Cameron faces No. 4 Toronto in one Class 1A/2A semifinal. The other pits No. 2 Caldwell and No. 3 Shadyside. The two winners will compete for the championship approximately 20-30 minutes following the last semifinal to conclude.

The defending champion Dragons recently claimed the OVAC Ron Mauck Tournament Class 1A/2A and are led by tournament runnerup Eli Tedrow (165). The Red Knights, who tied with Caldwell for second, feature heavyweight finalist Heath Thomas. The Redskins are led by Jesse Pemberton (126), also a finalist.

The Class 4A has No. 1 Union Local meeting No. 4 East Liverpool and second-seeded Indian Creek battling No. 3 Oak Glen. The two winners will compete for the championship approximately 20-30 minutes following the last semifinal to conclude.

The Jets, who finished runnerup to Beaver Local in the OVAC Ron Mauck Class 4A team race and fifth overall, feature three OVAC Ron Mauck champions in Gamble Gossett (126), Gunnar Gossett (165) and Kolten Snyder (215), along with third-place finisher Brody Perzanowski (190), while the Redskins’ Luke McMillion claimed the 285-pound title.

In Class 3A and Class 5A, Barnesville and Steubenville have dominated in their respective divisions and are primed to continue that stronghold.

The Shamrocks meet fourth-seeded Fort Frye and No. 2 Martins Ferry meets third-seeded Wheeling Central. The two winners will compete for the championship approximately 20-30 minutes following the last semifinal to conclude.

Barnesville won the OVAC Ron Mauck Class 3A team title last weekend and finished second overall to University. The Shamrocks amassed 200 points and are led by tournament finalists Colt Carpenter (144) and Hines Ford (175), who are first cousins.

In Class 5A, Steubenville faces No. 4 John Marshall while third-seeded Morgantown clashes with No. 2 Wheeling Park. The two winners will compete for the championship approximately 20-30 minutes following the last semifinal to conclude.

Big Red had two finalists in Jailen Steave (113) and Julius Mullins (138). It was the runnerup in Class 5A and placed fourth overall.
