19 Locals Heading To Girls State Wrestling Tournament
BUCKHANNON – Nineteen females from the Northern Panhandle advanced to the first-ever West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission sponsored state wrestling tournament by placing in the top 8 during last Sunday’s Northern Regional Tournament at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.
Wheeling Park led the way with eight, while Tyler Consolidated checked in with five. Magnolia and John Marshall have two each, with Cameron and Oak Glen having one apiece.
The Blue Eagles’ Eliana Winfrey (152) was the lone champion, with the Monarchs’ Morgan Brandon (165) and the Patriots’ duo of Kymber Heldreth (185) and Terriona Gibbons (235) all finishing second.
Other Wheeling Park qualifiers are Abigail O’Donnell (120, 3rd); Baileigh Brothers (126, 8th); Grace Tamburin (138, 4th); Kylah Cunningham (165, 3rd); Kendra Falcone (165, 6th) and London Fankhouse (235, 7th).
Representing the Silver Knights, in addition to Winfrey, are Arianna Hartline (138, 5th); Miya Johnson (138, 7th) and Chloe Dutton (165, 5th).
Also qualifying were the Blue Eagles’ Annalise Goddard (107, 6th) and Jozie Madden (185, 6th); along with the Monarchs’ Jaycee McEndree (185, 4th); Dragons’ Ava LeMasters (114, 4th) and the Golden Bears’ Alexandra Watkins (152, 4th).
The state tournament will be held March 5-7 inside the Marshall Health Network Arena in Huntington.
