High School Roundup: Bridgeport Shocks Monroe Central In Ohio Division VI Sectional Opener

WOODSFIELD – There will be a new Ohio Division VI boys basketball state champion.

Bridgeport’s William Drake made a layup with two seconds remaining Friday night as the visiting Bulldogs (17-6) stunned defending state champion Monroe Central, 56-55, on Junior Winland Court in a sectional opener.

Drake’s game-winner capped a 20-9 scoring advantage for No. 6 Bridgeport, which trailed 46-36 after three quarters. He finished with seven points.

Junior Jaleel Vincent netted seven of his game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter. He knocked down four triples. Senior Jaki Threet had half of his dozen in the decisive quarter.

Cooper Howell led Monroe Central with 13 points, one more than Corbin Farnsworth and Max Demchak.

The Seminoles led 20-13 after one quarter and 30-19 at the half.

Bridgeport advances to meet No. 5 Buckeye Trail Tuesday at a site to be determined by Eastern District officials. The Warriors upset No. 2 Toronto, 57-31.

Frontier 68, Shadyside 54

NEW MATAMORAS — The Cougars took down the Tigers in Division VII sectional action on Friday, Frontier powered by a big 32-point performance by Jacob Bowersock.

Jayden Johnson and Michael Hendershot each scored 14 for Shadyside. Anthony Hill scored 10.

Frontier led 26-20 at halftime.

The Cougars will face River on March 3 inside Martins Ferry High School’s Tolbert Gymnasium in a sectional co-final.

Brooke 75, Weir 57

WEIRTON — The Bruins notched win No. 13 on their season Friday, defeating the Red Riders behind big scoring outings from Andrew Murdock and Crosby Morris.

Murdock scored 23 and Morris 21 for Brooke. Bryden Horstin scored 11, and Grant Yost finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Ty Sperringer dished eight assists for the Bruins.

Brooke will face Fairmont Senior in the first round of the postseason in Class AAA. Weir will face Doddridge County in Class AA.

Clay-Battelle 70, Magnolia 58

BLACKSVILLE — The CeeBees defended their home court Friday vs. the Blue Eagles.

Kingston Christen erupted for 37 to lead Magnolia, making five 3-pointers and going 8-10 from the foul line.

Cooper Payton scored 22 and Colt Sandy scored 21 for Clay-Battelle.

Magnolia will play Trinity Christian in the first round of the Class A Region 1 bracket. The Blue Eagles will hit the road on March 5.

WVSSAC Class AA Region 1

Oak Glen 47, Ravenswood 35

NEW MANCHESTER — Oak Glen took care of business in the opening round of the WVSSAC Class AA Region 1 tournament Friday night, topping Ravenswood 47-35.

Addyson Wells and Ella Stewart each netted four triples for 12 points and Mikalyn Balch also poured in a dozen for the Golden Bears (13-10), who are the No. 4 seed.

Oak Glen now advances to test top seed Williamstown on Thursday night.
