High School Roundup: Dawson Leads Valley To Playoff Victory vs. Madonna With 42-Point Outburst

PINE GROVE — Valley’s Laken Dawson showed up for the postseason.

The Valley Lumberjills advanced through the first round of the WVSSAC Class A, Region 1 girls basketball playoffs with a 65-43 home victory over Madonna on Tuesday, with Dawson exploding for a remarkable 42 points.

Dawson reached her mark almost purely from the field, as the senior only made one free throw.

Michaela Miller scored seven in support.

Taylor Birkhimer led Madonna with 16.

Valley, the No. 8 seed in their region, will face top-seeded St. Marys on Thursday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

University 87, John Marshall 36

MOUNDSVILLE – The visiting Hawks ran away early and cruised by the Monarchs inside the John Marshall Fieldhouse Tuesday night

University led 21-11 after one quarter and 43-20 at the half. It scored at least 20 points in all four quarters, while John Marshall was held to single digits in the final three.

Jackson Helms scored 13 of John Marshall’s points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Harrison Central 50, Edison 49

CADIZ – Cooper Thompson only had three points in Monday night’s game with the visiting Wildcats, but that’s all the Huskies needed in their narrow rim.

With time winding down, Harrison Central’s Lance Smith drove the length of the floor before kicking the ball out to Thompson who buried a three-pointer with .4 seconds left to play.

Edison’s last-ditch heave was off the mark.

Brady Hyre scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Huskies (7-15). Bryson Kamarec added 10.

Dylan Long paced the Wildcats (8-14) with 13 points, two more than Kyle Long.

Harrison Central plays at Barnesville Saturday in Ohio Division V sectional action. Edison, meanwhile, travels to East Liverpool on Friday for Ohio Division IV sectional action.
