High School Roundup: Weir Edges Out Oak Glen; John Marshall Sweeps Doubleheader

WEIRTON – Weir freshman shortstop Lila Boilegh launched a solo home run to lead off the top of the first inning, and senior pitcher Eliza Utt struck out seven while limiting Oak Glen to one run on four hits, enabling the Red Riders to hold on to defeat the Golden Bears, 2-1, on Weir’s Roberta “Birdie” DeFrancis Softball Field.

With the win, the Red-and-Black remain undefeated on the season, and the victors have now outscored their opposition, 49-1, through the first five games.

The girls in red led 2-0 going into the sixth when the Golden Bears staged a rally.

Mattie Carney pitched well for the Golden Bears, but she ended up taking the loss for Oak Glen. The junior struck out eight while not walking a batter. At one point, the standout struck out five straight batters to keep her team within striking distance.

The home run by Boilegh was Weir’s lone extra-base hit of the game as all four of the other hits by the Red Riders were singles. Individually, Bella Weber recorded two singles and an RBI, while Chelsea DeVore and Utt each tallied a base hit.

Offensively for Oak Glen, Danica Holden delivered two singles and an RBI, and Nevaeh Heath collected a base hit.

MOUNDSVILLE — The Monarchs picked up a pair of wins at home Friday.

In the first game, John Marshall jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Nora Shock doubled, scoring one run, Emma King tripled, scoring two runs, Tessa Dougherty singled, scoring one run, and an error scored one run.

Ella Finley earned the win for the Monarchs. The righty surrendered four hits and two runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking none. Lily Dijkstra tossed two innings of no-run ball for John Marshall in relief. The hurler allowed one hit, striking out two and walking none.

King led the Monarchs with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 3-for-4 on the day. Kaylee White and Gianna Polsinelli each collected multiple hits for John Marshall.

In the second game, Kaylee White collected three hits, featuring for John Marshall as they defeated the Bearcats again. White tripled in the third inning, singled in the fourth inning, and singled in the sixth inning.

Lily Dijkstra earned the win for John Marshall. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out seven and walking one.Grace Seidler began the game for the Monarchs. The righty allowed six hits and four runs over four innings, striking out three and walking none.

Elaina Taylor led John Marshall with three runs batted in from the number seven spot in the lineup. The right fielder went 2-for-3 on the day.

BASEBALL

Cameron 16, Notre Dame 3

CLARKSBURG — The Dragons dominated on the road Friday, led by the top of their order.

Leadoff man Soier Reed racked up three hits, scoring three times and driving in one run. Two-hole Zayde Long thumped a double and drove in two, and three-hole Kason Angel had two hits and two walks, scoring four times and driving in one.

Skyler Cooey tripled as part of a two-hit, two-RBI day.

Long and Landon Francis combined on the mound for Cameron, each striking out two.

Oak Glen 3, Shadyside 2

NEW CUMBERLAND — It was a walkoff Friday as Oak Glen, tied 2-2 with visiting Shadyside since the second inning, scratched one across in the bottom of the seventh to stake a home victory.

Camm Dittmon had two hits, a double and a single, and two RBI for Oak Glen while James Robbeck also picked up a ribbie.

Ryan Collins doubled and drove in two for Shaydside.

Linsly 9, Parkersburg South 8

PARKERSBURG – The Cadets continued their winning ways with a narrow road win over the Patriots.

Chris Upton singled and tripled, driving in two runs for Linsly (2-1-1). Jaxon Murray (single, double) and winning pitcher Donavan Jones (single, double) each knocked in a pair of teammates, while Dom Fato drove in a run with two one-base raps. Kolson Ludolph had a double.

Jones struck out one and didn’t walk a batter in his two innings of relief. He followed Preston Hartley (4IP, 5K, 6BB) and Rhyder Dlesk (1IP, 0K, 1BB).
