WHEELING — It is very early in the spring season, but the Linsly Cadets are already making a reputation for themselves as cardiac kids.
The Cadets walked-off the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights at the Holloway Field Complex on Wednesday, coming back from a two-run deficit in the sixth inning to move to 4-1 on the young season.
“They’ve been working hard at it,” Linsly head coach Herb Minch said of his squad. “We had some goals this year, we have six seniors. We were trying to get them to another level, back to where they were maybe at one time a few years ago, and it’s exciting to see it happen. They’re doing it the hard way, like they did today. We’ve trailed in three of our five games we’ve played now and had to come back– and go in extra innings in one game– and win it.
“When they get the energy going, they’re exciting, they’re fun to watch. And I think we told them right there in the huddle that doing that, that proves they can play with a lot of teams around here now if they keep that energy up.”
In the sixth inning, down 6-4, it was senior Reagan Van Scyoc who tied the game for the Cadets, hammering a pitch deep to left field where it bounced off the mesh wall, scoring teammate Hailey Driscoll.

Van Scyoc raced around the bases and handily beat the throw home for a two-run inside-the-park home run that knotted the score, 6-6.
Van Scyoc finished with two hits and four RBI out of the No. 3 spot in Linsly’s lineup.
After working through some trouble on the basepaths in the top of the seventh, the Cadets spent little time getting baserunners of their own. Macy Sustik started the inning with a looping single to right along the foul line, and after a fielder’s choice moved the runner to second, Kimber Kotson laid down a bunt to first base and legged out a single to put runners on the corners.
Rebecca Jaudon was issued an intentional walk to create a forceout at the plate, with the lineup turning over to leadoff woman Alyssa Heath.
Heath poked a single through the left side of the infield, ushering a runner home and ending the game with a Linsly victory.

Van Scyoc and Heath’s at-bats were big for the comeback Cadets.
“That’s why she’s in the leadoff spot, she’s a great contact hitter,” Minch said of Heath. “And Reagan’s been our solid bat all year so far in that three spot. She hits the ball hard, and I think she’s focused a little more this year on making good contact. Last year at this time she had about three or four home runs already, and I think that was in her mind a little bit. So we’ll take the in-the-park home run, but it’s better hitting how she’s doing for us right now.”
Linsly finished with 12 hits. Heath, Van Scyoc, Driscoll and Kotson each had two hits, with Heath and Kotson hitting doubles for the Cadets.
“The lineup is starting to really come together offensively for us,” Minch said.
Madison Applegarth picked up the win while pitching the whole game for Linsly. She allowed 10 hits while striking out two and walking none.

For Wheeling Central, Maddie Miehle led the way on offense with two hits and two RBI, knocking a single and double. Sydney Hupp also singled and doubled for Central.
It was the other side of the coin that disappointed Wheeling Central head coach Buck Davidson.
“Our defense was atrocious today,” Davidson said. “I think the only earned run they had in that game was the very last one to win it. We’re not making the plays we’re supposed to, but give Linsly credit, they never stopped playing, they kept fighting and hitting the ball, putting it in play, and we just weren’t making the plays.
“When you give them six, seven outs an inning, what can you expect?”
Wheeling Central moved to 1-1 on their season.
