WHEELING — After three West Virginia state championships across basketball and football, Wheeling Central’s Max Olejasz has decided to remain inside the Mountain State for his collegiate career too.
One week after helping his Maroon Knights successfully defend their Class AA state championship, Olejasz announced his commitment to play basketball at West Virginia University on Thursday.
Olejasz made it official with a tweet Thursday reading “100% committed Let’s Go Mountaineers!!!!” accompanied by a picture of Olejasz in a WVU basketball uniform.
Olejasz was selected to the 2024-25 WVSSAC Class AA All-State Second Team as a junior. The 2025-26 all-state squads will be released next week.
In his senior season Olejasz averaged nearly 15 points and six rebounds per game, shooting 63.5% from the field and 38.3% from three in helping Central to an undefeated 23-0 season.
In the state tournament last week, the 6-foot-7 forward made 26 of his 34 attempts from the floor. Across three state tournament games, Olejasz scored 56 total points and pulled down 18 total rebounds.
Olejasz crossed the 1,000-point threshold this season in Wheeling Central’s final game inside the Central Catholic Athletic Center in the Knights’ regional co-final victory over Tyler.
Olejasz visited WVU basketball earlier this season when the Mountaineers took on Mississippi Valley State in late December.
In addition to two basketball state championships, Olejasz also won a Class A state championship on the Central football team this past fall.
Before deciding to stay on the hardwood and join WVU, Olejasz had received offers to play college football from Fairmont State and Furman. He was an All-State second teamer in football, earning the nod at linebacker.
