Wheeling Park, Brooke Earn Double OVAC 5A Swim Honors
WHEELING — Wheeling Park and Brooke each had dual causes for celebration on Tuesday as the OVAC 5A Swimming awards were released.
Wheeling Park head coach Mike Cook was named Boys 5A Coach of the Year, and Brooke head coach Derek Wayne was named Girls 5A Coach of the Year.
The Patriots’ Molly George and Bruins’ Faith Farrell, meanwhile, were both awarded Girls 5A Swimmer of the Year.
For Cook, the honor made for back-to-back OVAC coach of the year awards.
“It’s nice to be acknowledged and recognized in this situation because it’s voted on by the other 5A coaches in the OVAC,” Cook began.
“We had a good year this year,” he said. “We were OVAC runners-up this year. We had a really solid group of young guys led by a senior, which ended up being the reason they were OVAC runners-up. Brady Bowie is a senior captain leading our guys. He led a bunch of young guys in a very good year for us. If you see a lot of the points that we scored, a lot of our points were scored by sophomores and juniors. We only had three seniors, but Brady was our guy and our captain. And Brady pushed those guys and helped motivate those guys throughout the year. That’s why the two relays he anchored with all young guys went to state. He’s the only male senior we had that went to state.”
Cook was also proud of Molly George for her senior go-round with the Patriots.
“It was a very fitting way to end what was a really, really great four-year career at Park,” Cook said. “She scored 1,000 career points. She won multiple OVAC titles. She was runner-up in the West Virginia State meet. She was All-State this year. This was a cap on what has been nothing short of a great four-year high school career for Molly George.”
Morgantown’s Christian Hammer claimed the Boys 5A Swimmer of the Year award.
