High School Roundup: Chirpas, Lucas Power Unbeaten Martins Ferry

MARTINS FERRY – The junior combination of Giana Chirpas and Maddie Lucas was too much for visiting Cambridge to handle Monday afternoon as the Purple Riders (10-0) remained unbeaten, 13-0, in five innings in high school softball action.

Chirpas, who set a new program record for career RBI Friday, blasted a pair of homers to account for six runs batted in. The Ohio University recruit also scored three runs.

Lucas, who doubled in a run, struck out seven, walked four and limited Cambridge to one single. She threw 76 pitches, with 47 being strikes and faced 20 Bobcat batters.

Gracie Lucas, Maddie’s cousin, drove in a run with a trio of singles, as did Keigan Brandon.

Martins Ferry travels to Wheeling Park on Tuesday.

Monroe Central 10, Shadyside 9

WOODSFIELD – The Seminoles trailed 9-5 entering the home half of the fifth before scoring once in the bottom of the fifth, twice in the sixth and two more times in the seventh to stun the visiting Tigers.

Allie McFrederick singled in the tying and winning runs in the seventh to lift Monroe Central. Kennadi Jorris drove in three runs with four singles and Olivia Earley added three runs batted in. Jadyn Miller doubled twice to account for two RBI and Kamryn Winland had a pair of singles.

Alli Weatherson singled and doubled to produce two runs for Shadyside. Kaylie Warnock had a two-run single and Layla Samsa singled in another. Cam Kolvek and Bri Harris each singled twice.

Barnesville 5, Bellaire 4

ST. JOE – The Shamrocks (4-6) pushed two runs across in the top of the seventh to edge past the host Big Reds on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

Emma Swan singled in Josslyn Danehart to tie the game and Abygail Ady drove in Becklee Oliver with the go-ahead run.

Peyton Loudin and Oliver each doubled, with Oliver driving in a pair of runs. Loudin also struck out nine to earn the win.

Jaela Phillips singled, doubled and knocked in a run for Bellaire. Emilee Menendez tripled home a pair of tallies, while Elisa Gillespie singled in another.

St. Clairsville 10, Union Local 8

MORRISTOWN — The Red Devils pulled out a road win over the Jets Monday in a game with plenty of seventh-inning excitement.

Tied 4-4 going into the final frame, St. Clairsville scored six runs in the top of the seventh to lead 10-4. Union Local put together a four-run bottom of the seventh but couldn’t equalize.

Kenzie Carrel earned the in on the mound for St. C., pitching the whole game and striking out eight. Kylie Stidd pitched into the seventh for Union Local with Evie Blakely being called upon to record the final out of the top of the seventh. Stidd struck out seven in 6.2 innings. Blakely struck out the second batter she faced.

Carrel and Sophia Salisbury each finished with two RBI for the Red Devils. Lily Price hit a triple.

Alli Kellaway had a monster day at the plate with two hits and five RBI. She hit a home run and a single. Mati Brooks and Khloe Gallagher each doubled, Gallagher finishing with two RBI.

Caldwell 5, River 0

HANNIBAL — The Pilots took a loss to Caldwell at home Monday.

Ava Wohnhas struck out 10 for River but took the loss. Wohnhas also collected two hits, as did Carly Winkler– a single and a double.

Makayla Mumaw picked up the win for Caldwell, striking out 12 in a complete game.

Bridgeport 3, Valley 2

BRIDGEPORT — The visiting Lumberjills struck first Monday, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning as Michaela Miller and Maddy Miller each recorded RBI, but the Bulldogs climbed their way back to win at home.

Bridgeport scored one in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning. Hanna Brewer and Katie Jackson each had RBI Monday. Kaylee Baxter finished with two hits.

Brewer also pitched all seven Monday, earning the win and striking out eight.

Magnolia 10, Frontier 6

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Blue Eagles soared to a win Monday behind a banner day from senior leadoff batter Jessa Anderson.

The all-state shortstop collected four hits, drove in four runs and scored one herself to power Magnolia’s offense. Bella Sockman and Olivia Hohman each had two RBI. Hohman and Anderson each doubled.

Aerie Varner picked up the win inside the circle, striking out three, walking four and surrendering four hits. Three of Valley’s six runs were scored as unearned.

BASEBALL

Cambridge 6, Martins Ferry 4

MARTINS FERRY – The Purple Riders let a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning slip away against the visiting Bobcats.

Luca Sane doubled in two runs for Martins Ferry. Colby Kropka had a two-run single and Eli Smith doubled.

Indian Creek 9, East Liverpool 0

MINGO – The Redskins rode the four-hit pitching of James Brothers in their shutout of the visiting Potters.

Brothers struck out nine and walked four in going the distance. He also chipped in an RBI single.

Luke McVicker singled three times and Gavin Pownall had a pair of base knocks.

Steubenville 8, Weir 6

STEUBENVILLE — Needing his team to get out of a jam, Big Red head coach Justin Banks turned to senior Cole Bowers with a simple mission — get one out and get the team back to the dugout.

The Army football recruit and three-sport All-Ohioan needed just one pitch to accomplish what his coach asked, getting a groundout to leave the bases loaded and keep his team down just one run.

Then, in the home half, Bowers’ second hit of the game drove in a pair of runs and was part of a six-run Big Red outburst that would make him the winning pitcher in an 8-6 victory over visiting Weir High Monday afternoon at the Crimson Complex, snapping a two-game slide.

Cayden Braswell struck out seven for Weir in going the first 4 2/3 innings, but ultimately took the loss after Big Red’s bats finally broke through.

Big Red got five punchouts in 4 2/3 from AJ Borsch, but he also walked seven.
