High School Roundup: Chirpas Sets Martins Ferry Career Home Run Record

MARTINS FERRY – Giana Chirpas continued to re-write the Martins Ferry (18-1) softball record book with her 27th career home run in Monday’s 11-1 victory over visiting Indian Creek (5-13) in six innings. She already owns the career mark for RBI.

The junior slugger surpassed Mercedez McLeod’s mark of 26 set in 2017. The record breaker was a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning. Chirpas also singled.

Winning pitcher Maddie Lucas drove in five runs with a pair of doubles and a single. She struck out four inside the circle and gave up three hits in four innings.

Ella Mamone had a pair of run-scoring singles and Alivia Reese drove in a run.

Payton Rath singled, doubled and knocked in Indian Creek’s lone run, while Gracie Hollenbeck doubled.

John Marshall 2, Morgantown 1

MORGANTOWN — Lily Dijkstra limited the Mohigans to one run in a complete-game victory and the Monarchs moved to 17-3 on the season with a hard-fought win over their Class AAAA foe Monday.

Dijkstra allowed just four hits and struck out three on Monday. John Marshall took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a single by Emma King, scoring Elaina Taylor. Morgantown tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Masyn Inclan doubled in Kaylee White in the top of the sixth to put the Monarchs back ahead.

Madison Wisman took the loss for Morgantown despite allowing just three hits and striking out 11.

Caldwell 16, Shadyside 2

SHADYSIDE – The visiting Redskins strengthened their hold on the top spot in the OVAC Class 2A race with their five-inning rout of the Tigers.

Cam Kolvek singled in Shadyside’s only run, while Kaylie Warnock doubled.

BASEBALL

Wheeling Central 21, Steubenville Catholic 2

STEUBENVILLE — The Maroon Knights had no trouble racking up runs on Monday in a road win against the Crusaders.

Jake Brown homered and tripled at the top of the Wheeling Central lineup, finishing with four RBI to lead the Knights’ attack.

Zayne Rosnick doubled and Kade Koroneos tripled on a day where Central totaled 17 hits and worked seven walks. Zach Hanson finished with three RBI while Korneos, Clay Petry and Wyatt Brady each had two.

Koroneos also started on the mound for the Maroon, pitching three innings of shutout ball and striking out five. Seth Wodusky worked the final two innings before the game was stopped short, striking out two.

Cameron 11, Trinity Christian 1

CAMERON – The Dragons (16-3) continued their hold on the top spot in the OVAC Class A with their six-inning rout of Warriors.

Soier Reed struck out 13, walked three and scattered two singles in a route-going performance.

Kason Angel singled thrice to drive in two runs. Landen Francis singled and homered to knock in two runs, while Anthony Bellanco also homered. Hunter Evans and Zayde Long evenly split four singles, with Evans driving in two runs and Long one.

Caldwell 5, Shadyside 4

CALDWELL – The Redskins pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the sixth to slip past the visiting Tigers.

Ryan Collins singled and doubled to produce one run, while Dom Forgacs had a two-run single. Jacob Allen singled and doubled.
