High School Roundup: Maroon Knights, Cadets Each Advance To OVAC Championships

BEVERLY — Brayden Cover and Jake Brown combined to limit the Cadets to a single unearned run Monday in the Maroon Knights’ OVAC 3A baseball semifinal victory.

Cover started on the mound for Central and struck out 12 in six innings. Brown came in for the seventh, pitching a clean inning for the save and striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Clay Petry, Brady Ernest and Kade Koroneos each had RBI. Koroneos had three hits and Ernest had two.

Central, No. 3 in OVAC 3A, will face No. 1 Barnesville for the championship Friday at Mazeroski Field.

Class 4A Semifinals

Linsly 10, Edison 0

RICHMOND – The third-seeded Cadets (14-5-1) banged out 14 hits in five innings in blanking the No. 2 Wildcats at the Unified Sports Complex.

Tucker Doty was a one-player wrecking crew as he singled thrice to drive in a trio of runs. He also went the distance on the mound, striking out five, walking one and spacing out four singles. He needed just 68 pitches to get the job done, with 48 being strikes.

Dom Fato singled, tripled and knocked in two runs, while Vinny Gorrence added a single and triple. Jaxon Murray and Rhyder Dlesk had run-scoring base hits.

Brady Haught had half of Edison’s four singles.

Indian Creek 6, Harrison Central 4

MINGO JUNCTION – When the chips were done for the Indian Creek baseball team, senior standout Gavin Pownall came through for his team in the clutch just as he has done so many times before. With his team down to rival Harrison Central by a run with two on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Pownall produced a two-run double to give his team the lead. The Redskins tacked on an insurance run to make it a two-run game.

Pownall was once again called to duty in the seventh to shut door on the Huskies, as Harrison Central had two runners on with no outs, however, Pownall retired the next three batters in order to end the game as No. 1 seed Indian Creek held on to defeat No. 4 seed Harrison Central in an OVAC Class 4A Semifinal Monday evening up at Muth Field.

Class 5A Semifinal

Morgantown 10, Wheeling Park 1

MORGANTOWN – The top-seeded Mohigans scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and Maddox Boggs made them stand up as he scattered five hits.

Nolan Yanchak singled and doubled for the Patriots. Kolten Whitmire had a pair of singles.

Whitmire took the loss as he went the first three innings.

Kane Williams slugged a three-run homer for Morgantown.

SOFTBALL

Regular Season

Wheeling Park 3, Brooke 2

WHEELING – Kylah Cunningham belted a two-run walkoff homer as the Patriots edged by the visiting Bruins. Cunningham also singled and doubled.

London Fankhouser went the first four innings, fanning three and walking one. Harmony Bittner earned the win with three innings of hitless relief. She struck out four and issued a free pass.

Alivia West added a trio of one-base raps, while Brenna Tipton had a pair of singles.

Emma Bober and Emma Teller each had a run-scoring single. Avwery Rado doubled.

Buckeye Local 6, Union Local 5

RAYLAND — The Panthers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to flip the script on the Jets and pick up a win Monday.

Edyn McGary hit a triple and a single for Union Local, driving in two. Kylie Stidd and Myah Martin each hit doubles for the Jets and each drove in a run. Stidd pitched 5.2 innings starting in the circle, striking out six.

Danika Bauknecht hit two doubles as part of a three-hit day for Buckeye Local. Frankie Sawko drove in two for the Panthers. Karlie Lander picked up the win, going the distance inside the circle and and striking out eight.
