High School Roundup: Central Takes Down Buckeyes As Cover Strikes Out 20
NEW CONCORD — Playing at Muskingum University, the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights baseball team made it 16 in a row with a dominant 8-0 victory over the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes.
Maroon Knights pitcher Brayden Cover starred on the mound, striking out 20 batters, while issuing one walk and surrendering one hit. The pile of K’s was a career-high for the senior.
Offensively, Zayne Rosnick homered for Central, driving in two. He also hit a single.
Jake Brown also had a multi-hit day with a double and a single. He also walked to reach thrice.
Kade Koroneos also hit a double for the streaking Knights.
Wheeling Park 7, East Fairmont 2
WHEELING — The Patriots scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to secure a home victory vs. the Bees.
Brody Groome and Jaxson Updegraff each finished with two hits and two RBI for Park. Updegraff tallied two singles while Groome doubled and singled.
Myles Gorby worked five scoreless innings to pick up the win on the mound for Park. Eric Blazier pitched the final two frames, striking out three.
SOFTBALL
John Marshall 6, North Marion 1
MOUNDSVILLE — The Monarchs were triumphant in their WVSSAC Class AAA, Region 1 outing Tuesday vs. the Huskies.
Tied 1-1 In the bottom of the fifth, John Marshall broke up the tie when Nora Shock hit a solo home run to left field. Then a home run to center field by Paislee Babiczuk followed to extend the lead to 4-1.
Lily Dijkstra earned the win for the Monarchs. She gave up six hits and one run over seven innings, striking out seven and walking none.
Shock, Kaylee White, and Babiczuk each collected two hits for John Marshall. White and Babiczuk each drove in two runs.
Morgantown 7, Wheeling Park 0
MORGANTOWN — The Patriots fell on the road in their WVSSAC Class AAAA, Region 1 playoff game vs. the Mohigans.
Harmony Bittner led Wheeling Park’s offense with two hits– a double and a single.
Bittner also pitched the full game for Park, striking out five.

Magnolia 10, Valley 2
NEW MARTINSVILLE — In their WVSSAC Class A Region 1 playoff game, the Blue Eagles racked up the runs in a victory over the Lumberjills.
After Valley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Magnolia tied the game 2-2 heading into the third. They would score in each inning to follow, highlighted by a four-run fifth inning.
Jessa Anderson collected two hits and two RBI for the Blue Eagles. Bella Sockman and Olivia Hohman each doubled and singled. Sockman drove in one run, Hohman two. Aubrey Suter also finished with a two-hit game.
Aerie Varner pitched the complete game for Magnolia, striking out nine.
Kennedi Dallison led Valley with two hits, a double and a single.
BASEBALL
Union Local 3, Oak Glen 2
MORRISTOWN — The Jets narrowly defeated the Golden Bears on Monday. The two teams got all of their scoring out of the way early. Tied 2-2 after the first inning, Union Local plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second.
Colby Carpenter, Brayden Kovacs and Evan Poziviak each tallied two hits for Union Local.
Christian Chappell had two hits for the Golden Bears; Cam Carter doubled.
