High School Roundup: Hunter Shutler Shines For Martins Ferry In 5-3 Victory

MARTINS FERRY – Hunter Shutler was a one-man wrecking crew Tuesday night for the Martins Ferry baseball team.
The junior went the distance on the mound, allowing a pair of singles, striking out seven and walking a pair as the fifth-seeded Purple Riders (14-8) earned a 5-3 victory over visiting No. 12 River View in an Ohio Division V, East 1 District tournament quarterfinal game high atop the Purple City. Shutler also helped himself with a trio of doubles that produced a run.
Silas Simpson added a sacrifice fly for Martins Ferry which hosts No. 14 Navarre Fairless on Tuesday, May 26. The Falcons knocked off No. 4 Garaway, 3-0, on Tuesday.

MAGNOLIA – The No. 7 Red Devils collected 11 hits and received a solid pitching performance from lefty Hudson Florence in their road win over the sixth-seeded Cardinals.
Florence struck out six, walked three and scattered seven hits. In going the distance.
Caiden Bailey (single, home run), Matheson King (single, double) and Colton Florence (2 singles) drove in two runs each. Jaxon Starks singled thrice and drove in one run.
St. Clairsville will now travel to West Lafayette on Tuesday to face No. 3 Ridgewood in a district semifinal. The Generals blasted No. 12 Morgan, 12-2, in five innings.

MORRISTOWN – The No. 8 Jets relied on the superb pitching of Colby Carpenter in their blanking of the 10th-seeded Redskins. Carpenter fanned nine, walked just one and scattered four singles.
Brody Gregor singled twice and doubled to knock in a run, while Eli Rogers singled in another. Evan Poziviak and Braden Kovac each doubled.
The Jets will face western Belmont County rival and top-seeded Barnesville on Tuesday at Memorial Park.

Morgantown 5, Wheeling Park 0
MORGANTOWN – The Patriots fell into the loser’s bracket as Maddox Boggs struck out five, walked three and scattered five hits for the Mohigans.
Morgantown led 1-0 until tallying four times in the bottom of the fourth to blow the game wide open.
Jaxon Updegraff singled and doubled for two of the Patriots’ hits.
Wheeling Park will meet the winner of Wednesday’s Musselman-Spring Mills game on Thursday in the double-elimination format.

SHADYSIDE – The fifth-seeded Bulldogs led the No. 6 Cougars when lightning and rains forced postponement of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. There was no immediate completion date announced.
