High School Roundup: Whitmire Powers Wheeling Park Past University, 11-4, In Baseball

WHEELING – Kolten Whitmire was a thorn in the side of visiting University Tuesday in high school baseball action. The Wheeling Park senior and Seton Hill commit went six strong innings on the mound and hit a two-run homer as the Patriots ran away from the Hawks, 11-4.

Whitmire struck out six, walked three and yielded three hits and a pair of unearned runs in his 94-pitch effort. Miles Gorby singled and doubled to drive in three runs. Brody Groome singled twice and homered to collect two RBI. Nolan Yanchak had a run-producing double, as did Tristen Hays. Rylan Moore and Cooper Kelly each had an RBI.

John Marshall 5, Bellaire 1

NEFFS – The Monarchs erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth to erase a 1-0 deficit on John Blacker Field.

Hayden Hughes singled twice and drove in two runs to spark the uprising, while Jacob Cisar had a run-scoring double. Mason Markonich and Jesse McDowell also had an RBI each. Nolan Clegg doubled.

Jaxon Reese went six innings to earn the win. He struck out seven, walked two and gave up a pair of singles. The Big Reds’ run was unearned.

Union Local 8, River 6

MORRISTOWN – The Jets received a double, triple and three RBI from Kam Gordon in their win over the visiting Pilots.

Dustin Stitt singled twice, doubled and knocked in a run, while Karson Grigaitis had a trio of one-base raps. Brody Gregor singled twice and plated a run. Colby Carpenter had a single and double.

SOFTBALL

River 12, Marietta 2

SARDIS – Ava Wohnhas kept her exceptional season going with 12 strikeouts, a walk and two hits allowed as the Pilots (18-6) bounced back from their OVAC Class 2A championship game loss. She also belted a solo home run, her single-season record 15th.

Jada Kinny-Blair singled four times and drove in four runs. Alyvia Bayes, Bri Wiley and Cyla Jeffers all had two-run singles. Lily Renner added a run-scoring triple.

Bellaire 13, Shadyside 0

ST. JOE – Ava Ault doubled twice to produce four runs as the Big Reds blanked the visiting Tigers in five innings on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

Jazzy Green also collected a pair of two-baggers, while Ryah Givens drove in a run with a single and double.

Emilee Menendez scattered three singles in going the distance. She struck out three and walked three.

Kaylie Warnock had two singles for Shadyside.

Union Local 5, Bridgeport 3

SHADYSIDE – The visiting Jets scored twice in the fifth and added a run in the seventh to rally past the Bulldogs at their home-away-from-home at the Mead Township Park.

Kylie Stidd singled twice and doubled to account for four runs for Union Local. Alli Kellaway had the other run batted in.

Kylee Drummond singled and doubled for Bridgeport. Madison Aubrey had an RBI single.

Meadowbrook 3, Monroe Central 0

BYESVILLE – The visiting Seminoles (18-6) were shut out for the first time this season as McKendall Boyer struck out eight, walked one and scattered four singles.

Meadowbrook scored twice in the bottom of the first and once in the sixth.

Trinity 11, Magnolia 3

NEW MARTINSVILLE – The visiting Warriors scored in all seven innings to race past the Blue Eagles.

Olivia Hohman singled twice for two of Magnolia’s three hits. She also drove in a run.

RACHEL – The visiting Monarchs collected 23 hits in their doubleheader sweep of the host Huskies.

In the opener, the top four batters in the John Marshall lineup combined for 11 of 14 safeties, with Nora Shock (2 doubles, triple), Kaylee White (3 singles) and Aubrey Lilley (single, double, triple) all recording a trio of hits. Lilley drove in three runs, while Masyn Inclan singled twice and knocked in a pair.

In the nightcap, Ella Finley struck out three, walked a pair and scattered six hits in a route-going performance inside the circle.

Erica Seidler drove in three runs with a single and home run. JoJo Holland and Inclan each had a single and two RBI, while White doubled in a run.

BASEBALL

Cameron 7, Trinity 5

GRANVILLE – The Dragons trailed the Warriors 5-2 entering the top of the seventh inning at WVU’s Kendrick Family Ballpark, but scored five runs in posting their second victory in three days over Trinity.

Soier Reed, Talen Brown and Brennan Droppleman all singled twice, with Reed and Droppleman driving in a run each. Zayne Long had a two-run single and Hunter Evans an RBI double.

Long struck out 11, walked three and yielded five hits in six innings. He gave way to Ike Yoho, who picked up the win, after six innings of work. Yoho fanned two and walked one.
