Honecker Hired To Lead Wheeling Central Wrestling

Greg Honecker

WHEELING – Central Catholic High School announced the hiring of Greg Honecker as its next head wrestling coach Friday morning.

Honecker takes over for Rick Welker, who stepped down after five seasons of leading the Maroon Knight program.

“Being named the head coach is both an honor and a challenge,” Honecker said. “It’s an opportunity to lead, teach and inspire far beyond wrestling,” Honecker said. “I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to becoming part of the CCHS family.”

Honecker comes to Central after serving as an assistant coach at Bridgeport from 2020 until 2025. Prior to that, he worked with the Bulldogs’ junior high program for two seasons.

A 2001 Bridgeport High School graduate, Honecker also has coaching experience in football. He worked with the offensive and defensive lines for the Junior Knights football program the past two seasons and from 2018 until 2024, he was on the varsity staff at Bridgeport.

“This is an exciting opportunity because you now have the chance to shape the direction of the program, develop wrestlers’ skills and build a team culture that reflects your values,” Honecker said.

Honecker inherits a Maroon Knights team that is coming off a state runner-up finish in Class A last winter and is just a few years removed from winning the team title in Huntington.

“We want to continue to teach discipline, respect and accountability on and off the mat,” Honecker said. “We want to maintain a positive attitude in all practices and matches, while being consistent, coachable and mentally tough. We want our guys to get better every day.”

Honecker and his wife, Kristen, have a son, Landon. He will be a freshman at CCHS in the fall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
