A Dozen Basketball Teams Set For Wheeling Shootout

WHEELING – One of the summer’s longest running sporting events is set to take center stage once again this weekend.

The annual Wheeling Recreation Basketball Shootout will tip off Saturday and conclude on Sunday. All of the games will be played at Wheeling University’s McDonough Center.

“The Wheeling Shootout has been like a fixture on the summer basketball schedule,” said tournament director and Bellaire High School head coach J.R. Battista. “We are excited about this year’s event. Though the number of teams is down from where it once was, we feel like the teams taking part will benefit as they continue along with their summers and prepare for next season.”

Saturday’s action will begin at 1 p.m. and each team in each of the four pools will play two games.

Bridgeport, Shadyside and Wheeling Park comprise Pool A, while Cambridge, Magnolia and Mt. Lebanon make up Pool B.

Those two pools will play in the first wave of games, which has game times of 1, 2 and 3 p.m.

Pool C includes East Liverpool. Nelsonville-York and Wheeling Central, while Bellaire, Parkersburg Catholic and South Fayette are in Pool D.

Those two pools open at 4 p.m. and the final games of the first day go off at 6 p.m.

Sunday’s slate begins at 10 a.m. and is determined by where each team finishes in its pool. The third-place teams will play at 10 a.m. with the winners and losers of those return immediately at 11 a.m.

The second-place teams will begin at noon and the top finishers from pool play in their semifinals at 1. The noon winners and losers play at 2 and the championship and consolation game begin at 3 p.m.

Starting at $3.70/week.
