WHEELING – It’s no secret that Adam Gill likes playing golf on the Crispin Course inside Oglebay Park.

After winning a pair of OVAC Championships on the par-71 layout during his high school days at Linsly, the West Liberty sophomore-to-be, led wire-to-wire over the weekend to capture the rain-delayed ninth annual Bordas & Bordas Amateur Golf Classic on Sunday.

“I love it here. This is a great course,” Gill said after turning in his scorecard. “I love this place.”

Gill, who recently played in the NCAA Division II Nationals in Las Vegas, shot 31-32 on Saturday and followed that up with a 33-32 on Sunday for a 128, which was 13 under par.

“My putting was the key. I putted a lot better yesterday (Saturday) but I hit a lot of good shots,” Gill said of his weekend. “I stayed strong through the rain delay.”

With severe weather rolling into Ohio County around 6 p.m., tournament organizers sounded the horn to suspend play for an hour.

“We were on the 17 tee box,” Gill recalled. “We found some shelter and rode it out.”

He birdied 17 but then bogeyed 18 to give former Wheeling Park standout Gavin Goodrich a chance. However, the Cal, Pa. golfer came up one shot short. Goodrich shot 36-29 on Saturday and followed that up with 32-32 on Sunday for a 129.

Wheeling’s Justin Doerr was third at 131, with Chaz Ekoniak fourth (133) and Chris Sabol fifth (134).

Gill said playing at the nationals has really prepared him for this summer of golf.

“It helped a ton. Just getting all the exposure in a tournament and environment like that was a big help.”

Three of the past eight Bordas & Bordas champions have turned pro not too long after winning the local event, but Gill isn’t sure what the future holds.

“I have no idea. I’m just taking it one day at a time,” he said.

Other winners were:

– Wheeling’s Joe Doerr (135) in the Championship Flight Senior Division with a three-stroke win over John Fryman and Mike Lutz who both shot 138. Eric Snodgrass and Mike Wetzel tied for fourth with 140s.

– Wheeling’s Zack Eckman First Flight where he defeated Wheeling’s Ron Stephens in a two-hole playoff. They both carded a 146. Seth Abraham (147) was third, followed by Nick Oswald (150) and Grant Van Laar (151).

– John Marshall sophomore-to-be Drew Marling won the Junior Division with a 68-68 136. Joshua Rusmisel finished four shots back, with Tristan Davis (142) taking third. The Mooney Brothers – Beau and Ryan – from St. Clairsville tied for fourth at 145.

On the Best-Ball side of things, the duo of Goodrick and Ekoniak shot 60-58 to win by five shots over Gill and his father, Ron (123).

– Lutz and Bob Tajc won the Senior Division in a playoff over George Templin and Mike Wetzel. Both carded 128s.
