Chirpas, Wohnhas, Wright Earn OHFSCA Honors

GIANA CHIRPAS

COLUMBUS – Two Eastern Ohio high school softball standouts and one head coach were recognized on the Ohio High Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association all-state squads.

Martins Ferry’s Giana Chirpas was selected first team in Division V, while River’s Ava Wohnhas was a Division VII first-teamer. The Pilots’ Dave Wright was Division VII Coach of the Year.

Earning second team laurels were Martins Ferry’s Maddie Lucas (D-V); and Bellaire’s Jaela Phillips and Monroe Central’s Kennadi Jorris (D-VI).

CHIRPAS has been a mainstay in the Purple Riders lineup since her freshman year. The junior, who has committed to Ohio University, batted .560 with 13 home runs and 59 runs batted in. She was intentionally walked more than a handful of times this season and finished with 26 extra-base hits..

WOHNHAS was a threat both inside the circle and at the plate for the Pilots. As a pitcher, she was 20-7 this season with 295 and nearly 800 for her career. She fashioned a 1.40 ERA as a senior.

AVA WOHNHAS

WRIGHT just finished his 23rd season as coach of the Pilots. He has posted 330 career victories.

LUCAS, a junior, was 15-4 inside the circle for the Purple Riders. She had a 2.72 ERA and struck out 130 batters in 100 innings of work. At the plate, the leadoff hitter batted .429 with 24 extra-base hits, seven home runs and 41 runs batted in.

PHILLIPS, a freshman catcher for the Big Reds, hit .390 with 32 hits and drove in 21 runs. She had four doubles, a triple and four home runs, two of which came in the Division V District semifinal. She scored 31 times.

JORRIS recently finished her freshman season for the Seminoles. She batted .517 with 46 hits and 47 RBI. She also slugged four doubles and was second on the team with five home runs. She scored 26 runs.
