WHEELING – The Wheeling Miners saw their modest four-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt Saturday night inside WesBanco Arena.
The Miners dropped a back-and-forth 32-31 decision to the Columbus Lions, who handed Wheeling its first loss, 46-44, on opening night in Georgia.
Wheeling was threatening to take the lead late in the game when Darryl Clark’s pass for Alex Coleman was intercepted by Jakori Thomas with 1:12 remaining to play.
The Lions (8-0) ran out the clock to seal the victory.
Wheeling led 18-13 at the half and took a 25-13 advantage in the third quarter when Isaiah Robinson scored from three yards out and Joe Perry’s PAT was good.
Columbus grabbed a 26-25 advantage on a TD pass from Blaine Espinosa to Danny Fortson, but Ohio Valley responded when Clark hit Robinson on a 9-yard scoring strike as the Miners went back ahead, 31-26. However, the try for two failed.
The Lions changed the lead for the fifth time when Myquel Harvey scored from four yards out with 3:35 left. On the try for two, Wheeling’s J.T. Thomas intercepted the ball, but then threw into the stands for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
A pair of completions from Clark to Coleman moved the ball across midfield and a personal foul penalty against the Lions moved it even further down the field, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Wheeling remains at home next Saturday when the Mississippi Wolfpack visit.
