MORGANTOWN — Playing in the Mountaineer County Invitational, Wheeling Post 1 won both games of their Saturday double-header before taking a loss on Sunday inside Mylan Park in Morgantown.
Wheeling Post 1 6, Berkeley Post 14 1
In their first game Saturday, Wheeling had little trouble against Berkeley, with Jake Brown earning the win, striking out 10 in five innings, while Cooper Kelly, Dom Fato and Nolan Yanchak all doubled, and Brody Groome tripled. Yanchak, Fato and Chris Upton all had two hits as Post 1 tallied nine hits as a team.
Wheeling Post 1 9, Frederick, MD Post 11 1
Braxton Billick finished a home run short of the cycle while collecting three RBI to ignite Post 1’s offense in a sure victory over Frederick, Maryland. Aleks Zanieski also doubled as part of his own three-hit day. Chris Upton knocked in two runs. Tucker Doty pitched a complete game for Wheeling, striking out seven. His sole run was scored as unearned.
Garrett County Post 71 11, Wheeling Post 1 10
In a high-scoring Sunday affair, five runs in the sixth inning by Garrett County pushed them past Wheeling. Dom Fato was the chief run-producer for Post 1 with four RBI. He singled and tripled. Chris Upton and Jake Brown also hit triples for Wheeling, who had 11 hits as a team and drew five walks. Brown had three hits while Andrew Murdock and Cooper Kelly each had two. Steven Brodegard and Andrew Murdock combined on the mound, each striking out three. Brodegard went 4.2 innings; Murdock 1.1.
