WEST LIBERTY -- The West Liberty football team opens Mountain East Conference play Saturday afternoon with a championship-caliber test waiting on the other side of the line of scrimmage.
The Hilltoppers, 2-1, welcome defending MEC champion Frostburg State to West Family Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Hall of Fame Day.
It will be the first conference game for both teams. The Bobcats enter at 1-1 after opening the season with a 34-26 loss at Shepherd before rebounding with a 24-19 victory over Assumption last Saturday.
For West Liberty head coach Chad Salisbury, the beginning of conference play adds another element to an already important matchup.
“Everybody plays a little bit different because it’s a conference opponent that you see every single year,” Salisbury said. “And on particular years, you get a chance to get them at home and you want to play well at home.”
The Hilltoppers have plenty of reason to feel good about their start. After dropping a 30-27 decision to Walsh in the season opener, West Liberty has put together consecutive victories against Seton Hill and Post, including last week’s 35-14 road win at Post.
West Liberty has scored 90 points through three games while averaging 399.7 yards of total offense per game. The Hilltoppers have been particularly productive on the ground, rushing for 699 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 233 yards per game.
Senior running back Hunter Patterson has been the centerpiece of that attack.
Patterson enters Saturday leading the MEC with 552 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He is averaging 184 yards per game and 7.9 yards per carry while adding 13 receptions for 160 yards and three touchdowns. His 712 all-purpose yards are also a conference-best mark.
Patterson has accounted for 60 of West Liberty’s 90 points this season.
Quarterback Kohl Meisman has completed 42 of 69 passes for 458 yards and four touchdowns while adding 57 rushing yards and another score.
The Hilltoppers have shown plenty of offensive firepower, but Salisbury said the biggest area of improvement is consistency.
“I’ve seen growth every week, which is encouraging because I’m hoping to continue to see it,” he said. “But I think the thing if you look at our team is that there’s been lulls, whether that be on offense or defense.”
The Hilltopper defense has been productive as well, ranking second in the MEC in scoring defense at 22.7 points per game and fourth in total defense at 314.3 yards per game. West Liberty has recorded 21 tackles for loss, four sacks and two interceptions.
Samuel Hobbs and Seamus Mahon lead the defense with 21 tackles apiece, while Grant Neiswonger has 12 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Luca Neal has added 17 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Frostburg presents a different kind of challenge.
The Bobcats are averaging 362 yards of total offense per game, with quarterback Jordan Brooks directing a passing attack that has produced 525 yards and three touchdowns in two games. Brooks has completed 44 of 65 attempts, good for a 67.7 completion percentage.
Running back KJ Smothers has rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries, while wide receiver Ray Adames has 11 catches for 236 yards and three touchdowns.
Adames’ 236 receiving yards rank second in the MEC, while his three touchdown receptions are tied for the conference lead.
Saturday’s game also provides the backdrop for one of the biggest days on the West Liberty athletics calendar as the university celebrates its 45th annual Athletics Hall of Fame induction.
The Class of 2026 -- Seger Bonifant, Liz Flowers Price, Kailee Howe, Janice Johnson, Rob Lucas, Joe Maskivish, Dr. John McCullough, Alexis Montes Pierro and Kierra “Kiki” Simpson. The new Hall of Famers will be recognized during halftime of Saturday’s game.
