High School Roundup: Martins Ferry Sweeps Past Oak Glen To Remain Perfect

NEW MANCHESTER - In what could be a preview of next week's OVAC Class 4A volleyball tournament, Ohio-ranked Martins Ferry completed a sweep of Oak Glen by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17.

The Purple Riders (19-0) entered the matchup ranked No. 2 in the latest Division V Ohio Volleyball Coaches Association poll and have already sewed up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming four-team event. The Golden Bears (21-9) were third.

The sweep was the 14th for Martins Ferry, the defending Class 3A champions.

Wheeling Central def. Barnesville

WHEELING - The Maroon Knights picked up their 15th straight win and avenged a loss from early in September with a four-set victory by scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-15.

Central was led on the stat sheet by senior Remy Peters, who had 16 kills and 12 digs. Junior Chloe Groome posted 28 assists, 17 digs, three kills and an ace. Senior Olivia Stephens posted 20 digs and two aces.

Sophomore Teagan Peters added 12 kills and 18 digs, while junior Morgan Miehle registered eight kills and junior Jackie Maxwell added five.

BOYS SOCCER

Wheeling Central 10, Tyler Consolidated 0

WHEELING - The Maroon Knights scored in the opening minute and never looked back en route to their 11th win of the season.

Central received a pair of goals from J.D. Schoolcraft, Maddox Ochap and Logan Schoolcraft. Registering single goals were Carter Oliver, Jaden Bosley, Mason Shumaker and Owen Mullin.

St. Clairsville 4, John Glenn 1

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The Red Devils honored their seniors with a victory over the visiting Muskies at Red Devil Stadium.

Seniors Emma Gasber (2 goals), Ashlynn Lednik (goal) and Kiya Kyer (8th shutout of the year) stood out in their last regular-season home game. Kyer was lifted with the score 4-0 to preserve her program-record 33rd career shutout.

Junior Elizabeth Morgan recorded the other goal, while Molly Schultz and Kaylee Shaffer each logged two assists.

St. Clairsville plays at Brooke on Thursday before the Ohio Division IV sectional tournament begins on Oct. 19. The Red Devils have won nine straight matches after suffering back-to-back losses to Steubenville (4-3) and Linsly (2-1).

St. Clairsville was ranked No. 13 in the latest Ohio Soccer Coaches Association poll.
