Today, Give Thanks — and Take Responsibility

In his Thanksgiving proclamation, Washington recommended Nov. 26 as a day that we “unite in rendering unto (God) our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation.” But this day of gratitude was also a day of petition, in Washington’s eyes: He recommended that Americans offer “prayers and supplications” to God in order “to enable us all, whether in public or private ...
