Special Activities

Ohio County Council

The Ohio County Community Educational Outreach Service will meet at the Valley Grove Community Building at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28. Nancy Kish, county president, will convene the business meeting. The agenda will include final plans for a May 5 spring meeting and a May 1 area meeting in Masontown.

Any club representative who is unable to attend the meeting is asked to send an alternate.

Members are making quilts for children in the county. A class on the project is planned for June; to join the effort, call the extension office, 304-234-3673.

Woman’s Club of McMechen

The Woman’s Club of McMechen will meet in the McMechen Community Center at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28. Stacy Rich of Crittenton Services will be the guest speaker. Members are asked to bring a baby item to be donated to Crittenton.

Plans for a spring banquet will be discussed. The club will celebrate the federation birthday after the meeting. Cathy Bartlett, Jean Ann Sherman, Vicki Allender, Roseann Ferro, Marian Moore, Ce Ce Kiedaisch, Cindy Tribett, Vicky Battista, Charlene Hall and Regent Lawther will serve as hosts.

Yom HaShoah

Yom HaShoah, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, will be observed at Temple Shalom, 23 Bethany Pike, Wheeling, with a memorial service in the sanctuary at 7 p.m. today, April 27. Participants will light yellow memorial candles to remember Holocaust victims.

After the service, the Academy Award-winning documentary short, “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life,” will be shown. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Dramatic Presentation

“Resilient Spirits: A Journey to Reconciliation” will be presented in the Mount St. Joseph library, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30. In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Week, Wheeling actresses Elissa Gross and Chris Fontaine will offer a theatrical journey toward recognition and reconciliation.

The free program includes a short dramatic presentation, with discussion to follow, and is suitable for all ages, including middle and high school students. Reservations are required and can be made by email to christybfc@gmail.com.

Program

Tom Weinandy will present a program, “When Christ Visits Wheeling,” at St. Joseph Retreat Center, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1. The program will explore how service allows people to encounter Christ through the people in the community.

Weinandy has completed service projects in 25 states and a year of service in Cleveland followed by Wheeling. In 10 years of Jesuit education, he has studied social entrepreneurship, Spanish and business. Currently, he works in the Service for Social Action Center at Wheeling Jesuit University.

Labyrinth Walk

Sister Mary Clark, CSJ, will serve as facilitator for “Walking in Sacred Space: The Labyrinth as a Sacred Path” at St. Joseph Retreat Center, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3. Participants are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Retired School Employees

Members are asked to bring personal care items for girls at Helinski Shelter. A memorial service will be held for all members who died this past year.

Lunch With Books

The Wheeling Film Society’s conversation about the western, “Stagecoach,” will take place at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday, April 29. John Whitehead, professor of film studies at Wheeling Jesuit University, will serve as host.

Lunch With Books patrons may bring a bag lunch; free beverages are served.

Craft Fair

A home business and craft fair will be held at St. Jude hall, Eighth Street, Glen Dale, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, April 27. Raffle proceeds will benefit A Miracle for Maddox.

Spring Concert

“Opus On Broadway” is the theme of the spring concert of the Opus Music Club of Moundsville. It will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Third Street and Washington Avenue, Moundsville, at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4. Director Reva Icard has selected beloved songs for the program.

The club awards scholarships to Marshall County students who are furthering their education in music. While there is no admission charge for the concert, donations are accepted for the scholarship fund.

Book Signing

Wellsburg author Mary Jean Bonar will discuss her new book, “Go Forth! The Band Plays On,” and sign copies at the Brooke County Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1.

“Go Forth” is the sequel to her 2008 novel, “Overflowing with Hope.” In 2012 and 2013, she published two books (drawn from the original novel) as part of the West Hope Trilogy. Her new book completes the trilogy.

Trunk of Junk Sale

A Trunk of Junk sale will be held in the parking lot of Trinity Episcopal Church, Oak and Linden avenues, Moundsville, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 3. Calypso Celebration

Family Services Association will hold a Calypso Celebration at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville at 6 p.m. Friday, May 2. Island cocktails and a Caribbean buffet will be offered. Fairy Garden Workshop

The Oglebay Palm Room is offering a mother-daughter-grandmother fairy garden tea workshop from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 4. A fairy garden is a miniature garden complete with structures and actual living plants.

The workshop cost covers a fiber starter fairy garden. Additional plants, containers and accessories will be available to purchase.

Steak Fry

A steak fry to benefit the family of Gary Yoho, who lost his life to cancer on March 27, will be held at Grand Vue Park, shelter 2, Moundsville, on Saturday, May 3. The event will feature entertainment by country artist Matt Vanfossen, door prizes, raffles and auctions. Monetary donations can be made at any Main Street Bank or Altmeyer Funeral Home, Grant Avenue, Moundsville.

Retired School Employees

Retired Teachers

Dr. Maxine Knapp of St. Clairsville will present a program on a journey into her family’s genealogy. This research resulted in a book titled “Raffaele and Christina Musilli: Ancestors, Descendants and Life in Italy and the Upper Ohio Valley from 1772-2010.” Knapp has held various clinical, faculty and administrative positions throughout her 41-year nursing career.

Members are asked to bring nonperishable items for a local food bank as part of the group’s community service project. Rose Durant and Judy Jeffers coordinate this ongoing project.

People’s University

Robert Strong of SMART Centre Market in Wheeling will be the instructor for the sixth class, “Observing the Universe,” in the People’s University course, Astronomy, at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8.

Weather permitting, the class will use a telescope to observe the moon, planets and stars in the library’s parking lot. People’s University programs are free and open to the public.

Lenten Concerts

Tenor Mitch Spurlock of Wellsburg will be the guest artist for the Lenten concert series at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 1410 Chapline St., Wheeling, at 12:05 p.m. Friday, April 11. Spurlock is a member of St. Matthew’s parish choir. He has been a soloist on a number of occasions for concerts at the church and other area venues.

A light luncheon will be served in the parish hall after the concert. Free-will contributions will be accepted to support the concert series and the luncheons.

Happy Hilltoppers

Fort Henry Piecemakers

The Fort Henry Piecemakers quilt guild will meet at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 141 Kruger St., Wheeling, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10. A social hour with light refreshments will begin at 6 p.m. Member Elsie Sell’s husband, Mike, will give a presentation on maintenance of Featherweight sewing machines.

Genealogical Society

Earl Foreman will speak on “What’s in a Deed.” He is a retired attorney, historian and the town crier for Fort Henry Days. Light refreshments will be served.

Sons of American

Revolution

In this 125th anniversary year of the Sons of the American Revolution’s founding, Wheeling resident and SAR member Jay Frey is leading an effort to form a Wheeling chapter.

An organizational meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12. Joe Khare, secretary-treasurer of the West Virginia Society of SAR, will attend the meeting.

While the second siege of Fort Henry in 1782 is considered the last battle of the Revolutionary War, there is no Wheeling chapter of the society. The nearest SAR chapters are the Ebenezer Zane chapter in St. Clairsville and the George Washington chapter in Washington, Pa.

Recipe Round-up

Recipe Round-up will be held at the St. Clairsville Public Library, 108 W. Main St., at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 10. Patrons, age 21 or older, are invited to bring a favorite Mexican-themed dish and recipe and a beverage of their choice. For more information, call the library, 740-695-2062.

Brown Bag Lunch

Jacqueline Patterson, national director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s environmental and climate justice program, will speak at a brown bag lunch at Kent State University, East Liverpool campus. Patterson’s talk, “Another Way Is Possible: Transforming a Profit-Driven Society to a People-Centered Sustainable Planet,” will be presented at E.L. Blair Memorial Library in the branch’s main building, 400 E. Fourth St., at noon Wednesday, April 9 The event is free and open to the public.

Genealogical Society

The Belmont County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet in the genealogy room at Barnesville Hutton Memorial Library, 308 E. Main St., at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13. The meeting is free and open to the public.

For the program, students from Nick Saffield’s history class at Barnesville High School will share their impressions of what they have learned working with Mark Morton of Gravestone Guardians of Ohio when they helped clean Civil War soldiers’ gravestones in Southern Cemetery in Barnesville last summer. The students are Paul Sheppard, Tori Hannahs, Alex Austin, Nicole Markovich and Emily Lucas.

The Mount Pleasant Garden Club will meet at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10. Linda Dalton will serve as hostess. Belmont County master gardeners will present a program, “Care and Growing of Roses.” Pauline Irvin will talk about peony, the perennial of the month.

Regional Meeting

The Ohio Association of Garden Clubs’ spring regional meeting will be held at the East Springfield Community Center in Bloomingdale Saturday, April 12. The Dillonvale Rosebuds Club will serve as host. Mary Lee Minor, state president, will present a program on floral designs called “Rainbows in Your Garden.”

Fish Fry

A fish fry will be held at Wayman Church, 1136 Eoff St., Wheeling, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 11.

Agricultural Meeting

The Ohio State University extension educators from Monroe and Belmont counties will conduct a vegetable production and good agricultural practices meeting at the Somerton fire house from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 15.

Brad Bergefurd, OSU extension’s vegetable production specialist, will speak. Emily Adams, OSU extension educator in Coshocton County, and Levi Morrow, extension program coordinator for Washington County, will discuss food safety practices from field production to the table.

Class Series

Oglebay Institute’s Mansion Museum in Oglebay Park will offer a four-part introduction to popular American decorative styles from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, from April 8 through April 29. Classes will examine the social history, lifestyles, furniture and decorative arts over three influential time periods and conclude with a special look at how the Oglebay family lived.

Participants will have the rare opportunity to go into the mansion’s period rooms. Sessions will be led by Glass Museum curator Holly McCluskey. Topics will be Federal (1790-1810), April 8; Empire (1810-40), April 15; Victorian (1840-1900), April 22, and How the Oglebays Lived (1901-26), April 29.

Workshop

The social work program at Franciscan University of Steubenville will present a workshop, “Principles and Tools for Ethical Decision Making,” in the Tony and Nina Gentile Gallery, J.C. Williams Center, from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday, April 11.
